Jumped one off last week at the jetties #128529;
Connor Malark
ya’ll I am getting overly frustrated this season. I jumped a couple in late july in the bay but august has been nothing but shark. I feel like I am “putting in the time” (well as much as i can) but they are not where they were, where i think they should be nor when I think they should be there. Ugh! time is a ticking. I hear edisto is holding really well and that the jetties are holding now. my skiff would need a calm day for the jetties and i don’t know much about edisto unfortunately. I would think the bay would be holding as much as edisto…so much i know :-/
I’ve been putting the time in at bulls. Nothing but sharks… Either I’m doing something wrong or they just aren’t there. Frustrating to not know which one it is…

Had two jump off at the Jetties proper yesterday. Livelined whiting. One broke 80# leader like a twig…
Caught a nice one with Steve in July. He’s the best around by far. We saw a few breach in Bulls Bay last weekend but couldn’t get any to bite.

My understanding was anything over 80 lb for tarpon was overkill?

Depends on how you are fishing for tarpon. Some anglers are attempting to purely jump them and put as much heat on the fish as possible. In that case I would understand the large tackle.
TTKARL, I hear ya! I have actually chatted with DNR a couple times on the water out there and on land and they say they are out there…I must be doin something wrong

We were rigged for anything that happend to swim by… one hit a bottom Carolina rig, 6oz egg sinker - hooked to a TLD 25. Spooled 100 yards++ - jumped and snapped the 80# leader 20"+ from the hook. Drag was set at max, 18-20#.
The other took a live lined whiting, 80# leader hooked to a Battle 6000. Broke the 30# main line… probably on a rock.
We were not expecting Tarpon where we were fishing - we were fishing for sheeps and barely touched the rods before the fish got off.
I may have to up the ante if that’s the case. I’ve been fishing my rigs on the bottom with 80 lb leader and freelining with 50. Yet to hook anything but big sharks so far.

Ditto that about Bulls Bay being frustrating this year.
I just don’t think they are there in any numbers, making it really hit or miss, but mostly miss.
If you can find the right bait, then it’s the water that’s dirty, or if the water looks good, you can’t find the right size bait.
I hate tarpon fishing! Probably will try again this weekend regardless of weather.
Hahahaha! “I hate tarpon fishing! Probably try again this weekend…” that says it all WIGGS! Good luck everyone. Ill be out tryin again so hope to add some positive to this thread…cheers
Do any of y’all target tarpon in the James Island/Charleston Harbor area? If so, what depth of water produces the best results, what bait, and are there any areas in general to be looking for them? Thanks in advance.

sneak-
big baits, horse mullet, big hadens or a whiting. Just alive and lively. I change em if they get weak.
infront of sandbars off beaches, steep ledges like D hole, rocks. inlets
jumped one that popped 60# no prob a few weeks ago. may bump up to 100#
any body still trying for em’? Any luck out there?
We tried recently with large haden and mullet. Nothing but a massive bull red.

Saw three busting a school of mullet off Edisto a week ago. No takers. Fished hard his year with good bait in good spots with no luck. Still waiting on my first but it will have to be next summer.
