Last year at this time, buddy of mine was in Gtown and saw tons of tarpon rolling in that area of the 17 bridge near the marina.
Thinking about making a trip up there to see what we can hook into.
Anyone targeted them in that area?
Figured we’d fish live menhaden. 2 on the bottom, 2-3 on top.
Other advice?
Thanks.

Not saying there couldn’t be fish around the bridge but they do tend to move around and follow the bait. If bait is thick by the bridge then they could be in there. If bait is thick beach side or in the inlets then that is where i would fish for them at. Couple good guides in that area that get on them pretty good every year and would recommend chartering one of them to get a feel for the area 1st. I’ve fished up there twice with Steve at barrier island and he knows his stuff and catches good number every year.
Fished the jetties both times with him and went 1 for 2 the first time and then no bites the following year but did see a boat by us hook up. There fishery up there is better than what we get around Charleston and think it has to due with all the river systems that dump into Winyah bay. Studies show that for some reason or another tarpon fishing seems to be better around a fresh water outflow into the salt water estuaries.
As for rigs to use think it sounds like you got it covered. Good luck and give me a report if you end up going.
I live in North Myrtle. We make several trips to Georgetown every year. We have been doing that now for 5 or 6 years. Got a hotspot chart. Shows you spots. Tells you the best time of the year for different species. A couple spots we picked out. Was outside the North and the South Jetty and around the Mudflats. We hooked up the first time out. And got a spinner shark that was pretty cool I myself can’t really afford to pay $450 for a guide. And if you did use a guide he would not appreciate you poaching his spot. Keep in mind. You really got to pick your days to fish the Jetties. It can get pretty rough. Winyah Bay Area is a wonderful Fishery. Huge Sheepshead around the Jetties. You can occasionally StumbleUpon a triple tail. In the fall shrimping. The Bull Red Run is fantastic. Got my personal best there 54 in.
A few weekends ago on our annual CHS-GTWN weekend trip, we saw a bunch of fish by the bridge…they were all Sturgeon, but sure fooled a bunch of us for a while.

were the sturgeon rolling or jumping? My buddy seemed pretty convinced they were tarpon but I didn’t see them with my own eyes so can’t confirm 100%.

Both. We never saw any breech very dramatically, only rolling and barely clearing the water if they did jump.

LOTS of sturgeon in that specific area.
