I went down to Islamarada for my future Brother in laws bachelor party. We got there on a Thursday and I fished for Tarpon Friday and Saturday. I’ve caught Tarpon plenty of times, but I have never been successful catching one on the fly. Well the stars were aligned, b/c we got the best weather day possible. We were fishing by 730 am. Immediately we started seeing rolling Tarpon everywhere. As soon as we got close to the Tarpon we were targeting there would be 3 or 4 that would start rolling somewhat close to us. We started calling them “decoys”, they were trying to distract us anytime we got close to our target fish.
We ended up jumping 3 before 9AM and I landed my first one around 10. I jumped another 2 before landing my second. My guide was awesome, and we jumped some monsters. The tarpon we pulled out of the water was missing his gill plate, which I thought was cool. This bad boy will always be remembered as my first OTF!
The second day the wind got its revenge. It blew 30-35 and we couldn’t consider tossing the fly. We still managed to jump 2 on spinning gear. Great trip!

You couldn’t tell where the water ended and the sky began. I’ve never had it so calm! It was awesome being able to present a fly where I wanted to.
Thanks!
Wow, that’s some seriously calm water! You did a lot better than I did in Tampa a few weeks ago. Only saw a few fish and only had 1, maybe 2 decent shots.
Nothing better than tarpon or bones on fly.
Awesome

Yeah bones are tons of fun, but the tarpon and permit are so hard to catch. I’ve caught one permit in Belize and one in the Bahamas. But I jumped around 12 tarpon before finally landing one.
I’ve had shots at permit but haven’t gotten one to eat yet. I’m not obsessed with catching permit on fly. I know some guys will go to Belize for a week and don’t want to fish for anything else, wont even look at a tarpon or bone.
My favorite is being somewhere really remote, walking in 12 inches of water trying to sneak up on a big tailing bone and watching the whole scene come together.
I love the whole scene too! I fish for reds all the time, but there is something about being in crystal clear water stalking something. I’m looking forward to walking a few flats tonight!
Awesome

Thats awesome! I’m heading down to islamarada june 8th for a week. Hope we have as much luck! Crazy how the tarpon just hang around the marina waiting for handouts! Nice pics
Black squirrel do you have a guide yet?
Could you please PM me the name and number of your Guide…?

Thats some great looking tarpon guys
My biggest worry is that my wife (when I’m dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.
That’s a great shot of those fish underwater. What’s with the port side gill plate of the tarpon out of water? Is the photo capturing a bad angle of it or was it damaged and scarred up?
