Tarpon outfit

I have the rod and reels for Tarpon but not sure on the line What do you recommend
Braid or Mono for your line and what #?
On your leader what do you recommend Fluorocarbon ,Mono ,or Wire?

I like 30-50 lb braid when I target big fish so I know it won’t break. As for leader, I like a 6-8 ft piece of 80 lb mono if it’s the doodoo brown water in Charleston, flouro if it’s clear water.

Mono all the way. You want some stretch when they jump.

So Wando you prep everything in mono ?

Both have pros/cons.
Braid casts better, and lasts longer, but doesnt stretch, putting lotsa strain on terminal tackle and drag.
Mono doesnt cast well, needs to be replaced often, but stretches around 10% which is very helpful when a big female launches.
I personally use fresh premium (Momoi)mono on tlds for float baits, and braid (30-50lb Suffix) on spinners for plugs and bottom baits.
Use 100-150lb mono for bait leaders and 80lb flouro for plugs. Used to only use fluoro but its sorta costly, and the fish dont seem to mind the heavier mono.
Stay away from wire, they will kink/break it.

I too like mono(30 lb momoi) b/c of stretch. But you must keep it FRESH and straighten in out on your spinning reels after big sharks and such twist it up.

If you go with braid make sure your reel is braid-friendly. The old Daiwa BG’s and Penn SS series are not. This is from experience

An animal print thong works best. Don’t forget the sunscreen!!!

50 pound braid but 7 foot of 50-75 pound test leader.
