Came upon a school of tarpon and reds busting the water the other day.
Was an awesome sight for sure - big fish, I mean big fish.
Fished in the middle of them for awhile - drifting and anchored.
Only had whiting and croaker for bait.
Used freelines, float rigs w/ corks, and bottom rigs.
Couldn’t buy a bite.
Any suggestions on what I could have done differently…
I would.have tried cracked blue crab had it been available. But sounds like agreat time anyway! Big conventional reels and a large treble hook should work also!
Talked to a local guy who fishes the same area and noticed the same thing.
He was told that the tarpon were actually feeding on the redfish.
That is why the reds were “busting” the water and clearing it by 2 feet or more.
{The “expression” on the face of the reds was sure 1 of fear… )
This occurred in 30 - 40 ft of water.
Do reds normally do this while feeding? In this depth of water?
How big were the reds? The only reds I have encountered in 30-40 feet have been bulls.
