Tarpon Report with pics

Went 1 / 3 on the Tarpon yesterday. All of our bites were on live croakers and whiting. Great job Bill on the camera and Andrew on the fish.

Awesome pics!

I am going to be in Charleston in a couple weeks to try some tarpon fishing and was wondering where some good areas are. Everything I have read has pointed towards the bulls bay area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I fish out of Georgetown. Maybe some of the Charleston guys can chime in - Bulls Bay (sand bars or some change in the bottom) would be a good start.

Bulls is the closest to charleston that would provide you with the best chance followed by Cape Romain and raccoon. As BI Guide mentioned any sand bar out in bulls is a good place to start. Trial and error. look at the tarpon thread in the inshore discussion section lots of good into in that thread. Lots of time required if you want to really catch one. If you really want one i would suggest hiring Capt. steve they seem have it down up there or Capt. JR waits in the charleston area.

Capt. Steve why do you think you are getting so many shots up in the georgetown area? Is it because of the fresh water that dumps out up there or are these fish just layed up in the same spot they are in year in and year out up there. Just curious as to why you think you have done so good with tarpon in the past few years. Good work and thanks in advance.

Great question… Winyah Bay is dominated by freshwater with 5 rivers flowing into the Bay. We also have developed some new techniques for targeting Tarpon with live bait and artificals. When I look at the big picture of Tarpon fishing in South Carolina I feel as if we maybe know 10% of how these fish use our systems. Last year Dr. Jerry Alt put a sat. tag in a fish we caught in September and the tag popped off early. We hope to put Sattelite tags in a few more this Fall and begin to answer some movement questions.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully we will be able to land one.

Thanks for the awesome day on the water Capt. Steve! He has his tarpon fishing down and will put you on fish. I’m hooked now.
