tarpon rig

What recommendations for a starter set up to use for live bait Tarpon fishing in our area? Would like to use a 6000spinning reel with braid and a decent rod-? Would be used a few time a year and would like to keep it around $250 if possible. Please give brands and model if possible.
thanks for your help!

Go to haddrell’s & ask them I did that a couple years back. They sent me up with a Shimano 8000 on a 7ft 4in medium poll. Which is my favorite set up. I believe it was under $300. Just went to Florida and forgot a couple rods. Went to West Marine and bought a battle 6000 combo $149. It did the job. Put a 125 lb tarpon to the boat with it. Probably look for a little better rod when I get home though.

I am fragile.
Not like a flower.
But like a bomb.

Diawa BG6500 w/ a 7’ MH StarRod. Use at least 30lb braid as your mainline. Egg Sinkers (Size depends on depth and current) 30lb leader, with circle hooks and live crab or live mullet.

I wouldn’t hesitate to get a diawa bg boat combo for the task. With braid and some hooks, leaders, weights and floats, your still under budget. I got the 8000 reel and the 4000 combo. I didn’t get the combo for the bigger size because i listened to online reviews. The rod on the 4000 combo is comparable to 100 to 200 dollar rods. My combo was 97$ online. 7 to 10 circle hook and medium or large mullet or a crab free lined in the current close to the tide line. If you see other crabs drifting in the current its a good time to put a crab out. Lots of mullet by the beach inlets and have seen tarpon there too last trip.

Thanks to all for your reply!! are you using mono for backing or using a full spool of braid ? Second question: what size circle hooks do you recommend to use?? I am Going with a freind and want to bring the right tackle.

Thanks, Larry

I go straight braid on the spool to a top shot, or long leader. I like a good 6ft leader and a 7 to 10/0 circle hook.
