I was out N of the harbor fishing some grass along the waterway the same day. Went 3 for 4 OTF- biggest was about 7-8 lbs. I saw at least 30 and had six in casting distance for about 2 minutes. It was a pick and choose sort of day-cast at a fish, see a larger one, cast 30 feet to its left … Pretty nice day for an hour and a half of fishing time.
We had been hearing crashes in the channel next to the island we were fishing for about 45 mins. Walking back to the boat we saw a pod of porpise leave a rip that had a huge school of mullet taking refuge in an eddy. As we climb in the boat two poons crashed on the school of mullet. No doubt they were poons. Those were the only poons we saw, but with the commotion going on there had to be more. Too bad we only had our 7 and 9 weights with us. I left my big rod in the car- it was supposed to be a hit and run misson. D’oh!!!
someone is gonna stick one on a 12wt next year, sans chum!!! big, dark toads, pnutbutters, and oversized whistlers should be standard weaponry for july-sept. flyanglers…

im down with that prediction…no chum!! they are there, its just a matter of time…
I spoke to a gentleman that says they have seen them schooled up in some smaller creeks down this way.
Gumbo reported that a big one was caught the other day when a guide was redfishing.
quote:Hopefully will have lots more time this coming summer to fish. I would like for that someone to be one of us... haven't hooked one north of BFT OTF yet. The days when true sight fishing oppurtunities (actual fish sighted, not blind throwing at rollers) present themselves are so rare, but it pays to have da 12er in the boat at all times.

Instead of the chief saying “you’re going to need a bigger boat” I think he’s saying to me “you’re going to need a bigger rod”
I better stash a 12 weight in the boat too, just in case.
