So my dad’s elusive fish for the past 4 years has been a tarpon. The only time i ever went fishing on a boat was with my dad (which was quite often). Any other times i went fishing was off of docks and piers. Well, i finally got a boat and the second time out on the harbor my rod goes off and out goes line. As soon as I picked the rod up a tarpon goes flying out of the water. Just as quick as it hit and jumped, it was off. This proved to me fishing can break my heart way more than any woman could. Now my real problem is that I leave for the Army in 24 days. I have to find a way to get a tarpon in the boat before I leave. Texting the old man a picture of a tarpon would be one of the most satisfactory and humorous things i could do before i leave. If anyone has any location and tide tips, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks
just as strange we caught a big stingray that gave birth to 3 babies on the boat that same day
Bulls bay is what I heard

ouch yeh that would hurt.
I don’t have any great tips or info right now, but I will say that its only going to get better over the next 24 days. Good Luck!

Good sharp hooks, tight drags, and always bow to the king. Sounds like you have already found a good location. Persistance because you will never land every fish you hook.
Go out with Capt. Steve up in Winyah Bay. His website is www.barrierislandguide.com he will put you on fish and the tarpon fishing will only get better from here on out. Good luck catching one and I hope you can boat it, those fish are really tricky.
As strange as it seems, Tarpon seem to be showing up all over our inshore area this year. I think it would be hard to gear up just for tarpon and pass all the other’s unless that’s all you want to target period. I’ve heard of two in-shore fishermen boating small tarpon while fishing for Red’s. If you want a trophy photo, hire one of the local guides that does that this time of year. They are in Charleston now.
problem is i find it kind of hard to pay someone to take me fishing, seeing as my dad is also a guide. I think im just gonna go to that same spot and do the same thing. ill be out everyday till tuesday. castle pinckney was the spot so back there is where i will go. btw thanks for all the replies it is appreciated.
Curious why everyone says it will be better over the next month. I get the mullet run is coming, but all the tarpon are here already right? They just feed up hard before they head back out? Found a bunch a couple weeks ago but they really were not feeding. Jumped one and had another take. So yall think its going to get better or at least easier to get 'em to bite?
Inlets around bulls as the shrimp get bigger. Laugh all you want but that is where they will be.
big dog
Jumped one and saw another rolling in bait on Middle Grounds in Chas harbor a month ago. Some grown sharks there too.

It needs to get better soon, or I’m gonna lose interest. One was hooked and one caught in the area I was fishing yesterday, but just nowhere near the numbers for august. Also doesn’t help that I don’t have the same free time as I did last year. They’re crushing em in GA as always, does anyone have any tarpon fishing contacts in NC to see how it is in the sound up there?
talked to a family friend today that said it’s been good around Bald Head. Sure seems like there is less menhaden around this year compared to last
yeh i went out in the harbor yesterday and today and had problems finding the menhaden. when we did find them they werent in as thick as usual. very small schools
I have been out to the south end of bulls 4 time in the last week and beginning to lose hope just waiting on the mullet to move. Feather i know what you mean the bait just isn’t around like I want it to be. Last year there was big balls of hadens around and I haven’t seen any of that this year. Anyone been to raccoon or north end of bulls lately? Out of town for the next 5 days will be back out there next weekend somewhere hoping for it to get better. I haven’t even hooked one in 15 or so trips this year and need a reason to keep going.
I tried (first time) at Devaux today and we didn’t see any big schools of bait (hadens or mullet), nor any tarpon or shark for that matter. I was a bit frustrated and feeling a bit discouraged.

bootlegger, I took a swing at raccoon last week, fairly choppy which made spotting rolls very difficult. however i hooked up with a mystery fish along a ledge for all of 10 seconds then he was gone. Dunno what it was, but im calling it a tarpon to keep my hopes up for further trips. hope this gives you incentive to stay on the search for the illusive king.
