Tarpon Trip to St. Pete

Thought I would share these links. No tarpon were caught but the video from the center console is pretty cool. Also it will give someone an idea of the route to take to the bay. Leaving the boat ramp to the fishing grounds is tricky. I bottomed out the first day. Always take it slow in new waters. Report: One nice red and trout.

Thanks for sharing this. I’m leaving in the morning to go about 70-80 miles south of where you were to Boca Grande. I hope we have better luck than you did!

Did you see any rolling? Were others getting bit in the area? How many days did you fish? Baits?

Thanks in advance!!

Do you really think his answers to those questions will help you?

Don’t worry peepod, I’m gonna try the ■■■■■■■ you recommended for bait first!

Hard to do that on your own without being guided once or twice.

We fished for Tarpon Friday and Sunday. Friday was a “training day” to learn the area…its SO big! Getting bait was hard but by Sunday we had things figured out. We did see a few rolling Tarpon on Friday but not that many. We fished in front of the two radio towers on Pinellas BayWay island…For bait its VERY important to have the right size net. Nothing less than 12’ and on the heavy side. The pogies were only at the bridges and piers so you had to throw a lot and needed a big net…mine is only 10. WE had to settle for catching pinfish on a sabiki. The Tarpon were plentiful on Sunday but would not take our bait. Several large schools came through. We chased after one and got in front of them several times. Only a few boils at our baits but it was really exciting. After the chase we tied back up the anchor and move into shallower water ~6’…schools came by from 930AM to 3PM. I had a bump on a Zman smokey shad but that was it. No other boats hooked up either. I was told at the boat ramp everyone had a rough day. The key is having the right bait and enough of them. You need to chum often to them in front of your bait. I hope to be able to do it again next year…

Good luck! I heard the bite is better in Boca but its very crowded.

This won’t end well. I’m thinking 23 believes he’ll get one on the fly

Off the beach or in passes use crabs, look for loafing fish. The ones moving with purpose will rarely eat. Be out there at first light and stay in 12-18 ft of water.
Try to dip you’re own crabs as they are mighty proud of them at the bait shops.
Grew up in that are of FL and was there in June fishing for them.

you should take him to catch one here.

After being released, a lot of fish die, but a lot of them live also.

That hurts

And I take back that thing I said about you having the best hair in the business

In both of those videos, it shows the trolling motor with the collar still slid up the shaft. Isn’t that a bad practice? Mine has a warning about sliding that collar back down to the motor whenever you are not actually using the trolling motor. I didn’t heed that warning and the second week after I had it installed, my trolling motor launched at 40 mph. The shaft shattered from the motor all the way up to the head. Now, I NEVER run with that collar up.

Probably a good idea but mine locks in place and I have never had a problem.
