Tarpon

So I really want to catch a tarpon, but I’m a total novice with this kind of fishing. Anyone have any advice for me?
What are the basics? Hook size, bait, what to look for in a spot, etc.
Really appreciate any replies, this one has been on my list for a while

Tarpon can be very frustrating and finicky to catch. I’ve been in Boca Grande with 200 of them rolling around the boat and none of them would bite. In my experience, rolling tarpon seldom bite. They just pizz you off:smiley:

I’ve got a good tarpon hole near Savannah that I always managed to pull one or 2 a year out of in late summer. There is a real deep hole in a river that has an artesian spring flowing up, and they stack up there in the cool water in late summer. But they seldom bite. I catch about 1 about every 10 trips.

My vet(dog’s vet)called me about 6 am a while back and said he wanted to catch a tarpon, where should he go, what bait should he use. He’s pretty much a rookie and I sent him there as my best guess and told him to use live crabs. He hooked 5 and landed 3 in one morning! I’ve never done that well[:I] Sometimes lucky is better than good:smiley:
