Looking for some insight on TD’s. I hear guys always talking about fishing on a certain line and I’m assuming they are talking TD’s. If I am looking at my GPS and it reads like the pic. below, what line would I be on ? Thanks in advance.
I was wondering about this as well.

What skint back said. You’re on the wrong chain in your pic, which will consequently be your “60 line” once you fix it. Always remember Yankee Zulu are your chains.

Thanks guys. I had my boat in the shed last night and I could not get a signal in there so I put it on simulator just to take the pic. I assume when I get a signal it should automatically change to the “YZ” chain or is that something I will have to change in the settings?

Understood. Not looking to be exact, just trying to get an understanding of how they work. Thanks.

Best thing to do is put them in your GPS unit once you figure out the cordinets! That way you always have them in there then if you hear someone say there on a certain line in a certain depth you can see where you are and know! It want let me post pic but set each one as way points!

Well done, Hull Pass.

You will never get a LORAN signal again, Obama turned off the system 5 or 6 years ago. Couldn’t pay the electric bill or something. Any TD display now is using GPS and converting to TD, so you will have to select the chain and grids manually.

I thought they discussed turning it back on as a backup alternative for GPS in case of war time situations, etc. Not sure whatever happened to that though… I guess there is so much invested in GPS nowadays that the world would collapse if they tinkered with the signal at this point.
Hull Pass, what program is that shot from?

The machine is converting the GPS number to a Loran format. Each brand uses a different algorithm for converting, and Loran numbers get further apart the further you go out. So don?t expect it to be dead on if someone gives you a bottom fishing number. You’ll be a quarter-mile or more off. There are offsets to get the Phantom Loran to be very close to the real Loran numbers, but they change depending where you are at and vary by the brand of the GPS. Some people will guard their offsets, as much, as they would their actual numbers.
Offsets are crucial, and few people understand them. They’re like zero’ing a rifle. If you’re converting from a different book from a different box that was on a different boat, you’re shooting a different grain bullet with different charge as well.
Best case, conversions with local knowledge of offsets for a particular box/book/source is going to get you 120ish ft from something, so you best know how to use your sonar and not rely on a crutch of GPS points like everyone wants to. Preaching to the choir I think- if you’re who I think you are- but just saying so everyone can think about this instead of asking people for “numbers” all the time.
The TD offsets decrease as you get farther out while because the TD seconds and microseconds, etc. correspond to greater distances since the lines are spreading as you said. You also are shooting the pretend radio signal across less % of land area where the signal could be slowed down differently today vs 20 years ago or whatever.
My conversions are normally 180-200ft off, and that’s plenty close for me. Usually end up

That’s about as close as I’ve ever got conversions too, but it’s plenty close enough. 200’ is less than 10 boat lengths, and it beats the heck out of using RDF like we used to do it.

That’s about as good as it gets. This man knows his TDs I used to be able to do that in my head. Not today, I’ve been ruined, but I still have an almost identical cheat sheet in my notebook.

Navionics and Hiltons real time navigator is what I use on my iPad for back up! They link together!! Navionics is a one time purchase for 50$ for the program app. Works really good for the new iPads with built in GPS! Buy a life proof case and you have a 10 inch touch screen GPS for a lot cheaper than a unit! Lol… That’s what that shot is off of!

On some units when you go thru navigation settings it is listed as “ghost loran”
