I am suitably jealous and also very happy for the crew and the unmitigated success of this trip: honestly, and truly. My only issue would be, “what does this have to do with Charleston?” The story and photos are noteworthy and enjoyable, but would a different forum be better for this sort of thing? Sort of a braggin’ board or some such (Fishing Stories?). A worthy read and forum, but it should not be confused with an offshore report ostensibly about Charleston or at least the waters adjacent.
interesting perspective. I see where you are coming from but these fellas post a ton of useful posts in regards to the Charleston area so I think we can cut them some slack… plus those pics are just awesome!
I posted a report of my Saskatchewan trip last September on this site so I’m not one to talk
What an awesome report! I’d like to put together a similar trip for next year and have a couple questions to get started . . .
Obviously(!!!), July is a good time to make the trip. I hear they catch YFT all year around out of Venice and that they tend to run bigger but less abundant in the winter and pretty thick in the summer. Is that right? Any advice on the best time of year to plan the trip, or any observations on the pros and cons of different times of year?
Also, that house boat looks sweet. Did y’all like it and is it available as a rental?
Do you like to operate out of Venice Marina or Cypress Cove or somewhere else?
Our crew is experienced at road trips with our 27-30’ center consoles (say, to the Keys), and learning new waters. None of us has local knowledge out of Venice, and the mouth of the Mississippi somehow seems more intimidating than the 7 mile bridge! Charter the first trip to get the hang of the pass and learn the ropes? Or am I just being a ninny?
Thanks!
First, Venice’s fishery is second to none I have ever been too. You will quickly become a fish snob and start slinging 15 to 20 pound dolphin to get them in the boat and get you back to tuna fishing, you will be disappointed with 25 pound blackfin cause they are not yellows, you will get tired of catching red snapper BUT… just like anywhere knowledge is key. Guys down there are super nice if you treat them right. Charter the first few times to learn the techniques, passes, and rigs. People fish very tight on each others at the rigs. Need to learn how to manage in the crowds with out pissing off the locals. They can be your best asset or worse enemies. Just like here. Don’t be that guy from Ohio everyone avoids at the dock.

It is the offshore reports! Didn’t know it had to be Charleston people out of Charleson?
I hear what you are saying but, I went with 13 guys all that fish out of CharlestonGeorgetownFollybeachSouthCarolina areas.
Full Pull Sportfishing - 57’ Custom sportfisher that charters out of Tolers. Captain Ryan Riggs and owner JW forgot more about fishing in the car ride home than I will ever know. These guys are pros and could catch a tuna fish in a golf course pond. Charter them, best money you will ever spend learning how to fish and our waters. http://www.fullpullsportfishing.com/
Jigskinz - yea Courtland is a Yankee and all but he came up with a heck of a product and it works!! (Courtland didn’t make the trip but his products were heavily used) http://www.jigskinz.com/
Freeman Boatworks - Billy Freeman builds the best center console I have ever been on. If you haven’t taken a sea trial and you are considering a big center console you owe it to yourself to do so. www.Freemanboatworks.com
Fair point and thank you for the honesty vis-a-vis your perspective.
Scoutin,
I think I misstated the point. I enjoyed the success and given Northchucky’s reminder about useful local information, I would not begrudge your posting…I did say I was jealous. I just think perhaps it is time or appropriate for a different forum. I would love to enthrall you all with my recent success in the gulf off Tarpon Springs, FL (Lots-o-groupa) but I did not think it relevant. Perhaps I am wrong here…it is “offshore” no matter the location. Still Jealous, though.
Many readers from CHS long for the days to once again get into yft.
I couldn’t wait, late Oct 2010 we did well out of Venice Marina.
(posted it here)
Saved enough coin and have reservations Oct/Nov this year.
We’re not trying to sell this fishery to folks from CHS but rather expose it and maybe convince a few sportsmen to give it a try. It’s a good drive (or flight) but the boat ride out is similar in distance out of CHS & the rates are reasonable. There isn’t a Holiday Inn Express so as S4G mentioned; charter or hire a local for an initial trip out.
BTW: could someone please post some trip results out of VA or MD where the bsb are 5+ lbs and ya can retain more than 5 per person…
All I can say about that fishing is WOW and Dang !! Serious business right there. I’m too old to catch fish that big, but I’ll drive the boat:smiley:
I think I can answer this though…
quote:on a side note... What do you use this for?!
It is a weed harvester used to keep the canals free of seaweed.

You have my interest…
So how does it work? Drags something? What does the little crane do? All the HP with those big engines?
As far as the natty light, you can only get so sophisticated with our group. We tried that wine stuff one time but the boxes kept getting wet and the bags busted open all over the samaches.
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!
My advice is my opinion only. I may have gotten that opinion from something I read while sitting on the toilet. Please keep that in mind when reading my posts, the information may not be correct.
