My last memory from Venice was a few months ago when we delivered the “Pale Horse” a 37 Freeman to Captain Kevin Beach of the Mexican Gulf Fishing company. I was in a battle with a big tuna and lets be honest… he kicked my butt! And after a nice pin wheel the line parted at the boat. He won the battle but the war was going to be ours!!
I called in the cavalry, the big guns, the best of the best! Let’s go TUNA FISHING BOYS!!!
Packed up with all the “essentials” BrianH, Pross, Rub-it-In, the Judge, Chunky Dunk, Lns, Haywood, and I met with the All Rise and BHCH in Hotlanta and off to the end of the Mississippi!
Stopped at Salvos for a late lunch and 60 pounds of crawfish as snack food for the week.
An afternoon shower provided the last bit of direction we needed! Even the good Lord was happy to see us in Venice!
Dropped the boats off at the house boat and went to hang out with our boy T-rav (Travis Mayeux) of the MGFC, he was cleaning a limit of yellowfin and in a great mood! Fish are hear! You boys are just in time!
Got the boats rigged and ready to roll first thing Sunday morning.
Sunday Fun-day
Morning showers!
Made it to the grounds and it wasn’t long before fish on!
Chunky worked the rod and halfway though the fight the bottom fell out. School of flyers buzzed the tower and BAM!! ZZZZZZ!!! ZZZZZZ!! 2 more on!!
Awesome pics and trip. One of the many things I miss about home (LA native) its not called sportsmans paradise for nothing. and of course Salvo’s caught that part at the beginning awesome crawfish
What an awesome report! I’d like to put together a similar trip for next year and have a couple questions to get started . . .
Obviously(!!!), July is a good time to make the trip. I hear they catch YFT all year around out of Venice and that they tend to run bigger but less abundant in the winter and pretty thick in the summer. Is that right? Any advice on the best time of year to plan the trip, or any observations on the pros and cons of different times of year?
Also, that house boat looks sweet. Did y’all like it and is it available as a rental?
Do you like to operate out of Venice Marina or Cypress Cove or somewhere else?
Our crew is experienced at road trips with our 27-30’ center consoles (say, to the Keys), and learning new waters. None of us has local knowledge out of Venice, and the mouth of the Mississippi somehow seems more intimidating than the 7 mile bridge! Charter the first trip to get the hang of the pass and learn the ropes? Or am I just being a ninny?
I am suitably jealous and also very happy for the crew and the unmitigated success of this trip: honestly, and truly. My only issue would be, “what does this have to do with Charleston?” The story and photos are noteworthy and enjoyable, but would a different forum be better for this sort of thing? Sort of a braggin’ board or some such (Fishing Stories?). A worthy read and forum, but it should not be confused with an offshore report ostensibly about Charleston or at least the waters adjacent.
