What makes a teaser reel worth $900? It seems like they are such a simple little mechanism for a simple job that even really nice ones would barely break a few hundred dollars. Is it because elsewhere dredges can get really heavy?

I’ve always wondered the same thing. I have been contemplating picking up some old 114 Penn and using the below.

My dad has a pair of pancake teaser reels and they were the $900 ones but they are worth it. Its nothing like using a reel made for a rod, much much smoother and almost ZERO effort retreiving the teasers(one finger to retreive it). That being said he has sport fisher and the distance that those lines have to go out and the teasers we use almost requires something like we are using now. A smaller boat may not call for it. Another advantage is when in the helm it only takes the driver to reel the teasers in as they are mounted directly over the captains chair on the top. So if im the only one up top driving I can reel in both teasers quickly before any fish tangle in them, before not so quickly because one was mounted on either side of the helm near where the riggers fold out. Dredges can be pulled off these reels, possibly, but it would have to be a small one, but i dont see that often. The dredges are usually run on the down riggers or off the transom. Personally, for not sailfishing, you cant beat pulling it just beyond the prop wash off the transom. The down riggers a lot of time will be mounted up top in the helm. Look for them to come out when the sail fish come in.
I have to admit, I’m probably in a different tax bracket than someone who can comfortably say they are worth it. How does it get to 900$ in value? Since you own some chaser, what makes them worth that much, do you see $500 of engineering/design/material? I kind of think I could design some to be made for WAY less.
I’ve seen the adapters that the viper posted as well, seems more in line.

Also tell your dad to take me fishing on his boat, sounds a little better than mine.

I saw the rig on Reel Wheels, an 82 Merritt(?)and knew I’d have to get by with each teaser line looped to a cleat. Recessed in her overhead is more than $900 worth of hardware. Most likely push buttons with presets.
I tried mounting an Okuma 50W under the T-top and running a line to port & stbd outriggers’ first guide with 300# mono. The reel didn’t have a low gear ratio to crank in 2 spreader bars while running 7 knots. A 2 spd. reel in low would probably be too slow.
Back to the cleats!
I suppose its all relative. I had a chaser, gone now. We would be more than happy to take you fishing, always looking for some new folks to fish with. Its hard to imagine that they are worth it until you use them and were using something else. and you have to fish often to justify it as well. And sure there isnt that much money invested in producing these reels but the manufactures know what people are willing to pay and price accordingly, especially gear for sportfishers. its ridiculous in some cases. The boat stays at Ripley Light so if you ever want to take a look at them let me know.
cannon made some a few yrs back.that is what i have but it took alot of work to find them…about 180 ea and i had to make some custom brackets to fit my hard top…
anybody need a new teaser? won this in a raffle.
it would make my 14’ boat turn circles if i tried to drag it for a sail in the channel this summer

Do those who are using these for teasers have them under your t-top on the t-top rail or where? Any pics of them in use? I am trying to figure out a better way to run teasers this year and havent decided on anything yet.

Plan to have these on my boat as well.
They have a great drag system and are quite “cheap” relative to the other stuff. They’re painted aluminum. Probably need to coat them with a good protectant like woody wax, and you’re good for each season.

I have them under my t-top and you can reach both while driving. I’ll take a picture next time I make it to the boat.

Thanks for the pics and ■■■■■■■■. I think I am going to try a couple of the big jons and see how they work.

If ya plan on using BigJon’s for teasers let them know when ya order.
Different drag materials than in their intended planer operation.
In the past we have sold similar pancake reels at Haddrells. They werent $900 but they werent cheap. We had 2 sizes and they retailed for just under $500. If anyone is interested I can get more info and see about ordering some.
