I’ve always ran either 2 teasers, one off each rear cleat or a set of big and small birds off a heavy rod in the middle of the stern of the boat somewhere mid spread. I’m wanting to start running either squid/bird teasers or dredge teasers off my first eye of the outriggers and put simple reels on them. My thought since I don’t have a rail around my t-top (it’s massive) I would take a broken rod and put a reel on it and put it on my outter rocket launchers angled like kingfish rodholders off the t-top. Any specific reel I need strength wise? My thoughts were just some old Penn 309’s I had laying around. Have upgraded some lures, rods/reels and got some 48oz trolling weights to go with my 32oz ones as of late and wanting to upgrade the presentation while I’m at it. Still haven’t dropped the big coin on rods/reels yet but have upgraded to a few 80-130# bent butts with straight butt options and put some Squall 50VSW’s on. Got my fingers crossed that I can HST some this year with them and atleast give that a go.
Anyhow, looking for some suggestions on the teaser reel and if I’m in the right direction with using something like a 309 for them.
I have big Jon teaser reels. They are like 100$ a piece and have worked great for pulling spreader bars out of my outriggers. They mount to T-top rails which is nice too.
If I HST I only plan to run 3 bullet head 7.5oz 12” naked baits, no teasers. I’ve never HST before. First attempt may not be til I go to the keys where I’ll go at first light on the reefs edge in Key Largo and HST to Islamorada before heading to the humps for tuna and Mahi.
I would pick up some used Penn 114H 6/0 for teasers. Plenty strong and you can get decent ones for $60 or so on Ebay, sometimes $30 local. Being bored, I would even service/clean it up for you no charge.

line guides are nice, if you can find a reel that has the guide and will be strong enough to get your teasers in with desired line cpacity.
I ran Penn114’s last year off second eye of outriggers (18ft). Many times the person reeling in teaser was too excited to spread the line across the reel.
I am using a couple of these Shimano Charter Specials this year. Or atleast I hope to use them soon.
