Teleflex Baystar Hydraulic Steering

Looking to replace my cable steering to hydraulic steering. Wondering if this could be a DIY project or should I let a professional take care of it? Watched a little video on installation on youtube, didn’t seem to tough. Thanks.

It’s easy. Should be no problem if you are a little bit handy.

Thanks Larry, that’s what I thought. I’m gong to price shop online and try to find the best deal on this item.

I just did mine and the install was the easy part. The hard part was pulling the old system out. I ended up having to fab up a mounting plate out of a cutting board to cover up the old holes. It worked really well just took a bit more time but nothing difficult. This is where I found the best deal for mine:

I believe on the 17 seapro, the engine must be removed from the transom to remove and reinstall the steering cable

Chris - you and I discussed this concerning my Sea Pro 170cc and I see no way to remove the steering cable without removing the motor. Also, thanks for all the help a few weeks back!

I put a Baystar in a Key West Stealth flats boat a couple of months ago. Found an alternate solution to get the old cable thru without taking off the motor. Just cut the dang cable right before it goes into the motor! Heck you’re going to throw everything away anyway. LOTS easier than taking the motor off. I took my $12 electric angle cutter/grinder and it went through it in no time. Had a nice clean end to pull back through the console too. Just remember to tie a messenger line to the old cable so you can pull the new hydralic tubes back towards the motor. It is DIY project. My 14 year old daughter was my assistant, 2 hours and done. Working great.

^^+1

If you are not going to reuse it, cut it. I used a sawzall…more than one way to skin a cat.

Thanks for the advice, I don’t know why I never thought about just cutting it clean like you just mentioned. Such an easy concept that never entered my mind.

Glad I could help, that’s what these forums are for. Just remember to isolate the old steering cable from the other wires/lines going to the motor so you don’t cut anything else by accident. I put a small piece of plywood between the steering cable and everything else.

the only reason you need to remove the motor is to INSTALL a new cable, if you are installing hydraulic steering, cut it
