Tell SAMFC you did not snapper fish due to weather

Guys, if you were planning on snapper fishing either this weekend or last and were blown out due to weather…there is a way to report this so that HOPEFULLY we can get another weekend.

Go to www.myfishcount.com
Register as a new account if you don’t have one.
Start a new trip
It will ask for the date, your boat registration number, etc.
On the next screen, END the trip.
It will ask you if the trip actually happened—choose “no”
Then choose weather as the factor that caused you to cancel.

The way I see it, if you have a boat, the SAMFC will assume that you fished and you caught at least 1 red snapper. Report that you did not fish (if you didn’t) so the SAMFC can not over-estimate the amount of snapper caught during the 2017 mini-season.

The purpose of this pilot reporting system is to provide fishery managers with information on the recreational snapper fishery and to provide fisherman an opportunity to report their catch. A summary report will be emailed after the mini-season is completed so you can see the results of the pilot program. Thank you for participating in our pitot program.

Thanks,

If you did manage to get out, you can report your trip and your catch for an accurate count.

Tried, but could not log on.
If SAMFC thinks any body ( except those with large boats ) fished for snapper this weekend, we have a more serious problem than we thought.

I had trouble too, but they sent an email link with the active account. Check your email for the link.

I logged our trip for last weekend and a canceled one for this weekend. I’m not giving them coordinates where I fished though. 100’ of water at the jetties is just fine.

They indicated ya need to be in mobile distance…
Not true.
I’m half a gazillion miles East of Y-73 and my phone has been in airplane mode since 1 Nov.
Got an email to begin reporting.
Sure hope this doesn’t backfire on us.

done- 2 weekends without a fishable day- great season

Is there a spot for… “I didn’t waste my time to drive down for a 1 Fish limit” section?

I spoke with SAFMC today on the phone. This was in response to a direct email that I sent to them telling them that I could not fish due to the weather and that I would like another weekend. I also expressed my displeasure in the accuracy of the Red snapper population and the methods by which they base these decisions. I was told that SAFMC does not make the decision to have a season or not. I was also told that the decision to have a season was based solely on estimated by- catch kills and had no basis in actual numbers of fish either observed or caught by recreational fisherman. This was followed by an explanation that to change the way Red Snapper populations would be assessed from estimates to actual numbers would take years due to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. Unsolicited, I was also told that commercial fisherman are not disproportionately represented on the Council and that was a misunderstanding by the recreational fishing community.
I let her know that it has been my experience that the Red Snapper have seemingly over populated most of my grouper/trigger/Sea Bass spots and she responded that she was aware of this but there was nothing they could do.
Now heres a nice story for you. Friday Nov 3rd we went fishing. Left early and ran out to the ledge for an early Wahoo bite. Unfortunately we managed two barracuda and a 60lb AJ all of which were released. It was around noon that we decided to give up on trolling and head back in to catch our one fish per man limit of the endangered Red Snapper. On our way in we saw a boat with blue lights at about 40 miles offshore chasing down another boat. As we got closer, the blue lit boat left an inspecting officer (thats what they called him) on the other boat and turned nose directly at us.Oh boy, here we go. So up pulls a SCDNR boat with a guy and gal. They pull along side of us and ask us how many red snapper had we caught today. I told them that we were just coming off the ledge and didn’t have a single fish in the box. With disb

It would be really interesting to see a post from the boat that was boarded by “the inspecting officer”.

Filet and release, our fishery is controlled by idiots anyways…

yeah we are definitely screwed. if everyone got a survey ticket saying no fish were caught, SAFMC would say “SEE!, they are so endangered people can catch them”. but if everyone got a survey ticket saying every person caught a fish, they would say “SEE!, recreation fisherman are catching too many snapper” and it’d be another 5 years before we get another 2 weekend season.
