I’m needing a little help from the CF brain trust…I was having my temp alarm go off at low rpms (trolling speed) on my 2003 Johnson 90hp 2 stroke. I replaced the water pump and the alarm went away for a little while…but the last few times I’ve had her out…same thing…alarm goes off at low rpms. I can run on plane all day long with no issue. I have a strong stream from the tell tale. Could this be a thermostat issue ?
I’m gonna check the thermostat for sand or debris…possibly replace…Chris, will the pressure release valve be near the thermostat ? I’m still trying to find info on where the thermostat is located. I’m hoping that cleaning or replacing these two items will take care of the issue…this whole thing started after I stuck it in shallow water in Georgetown…
Ok…found a parts diagram for my engine…J90PLSTC, 2003 model…I see the thermostat and spring, but I do not see any sort of pressure relief valve…Any ideas ?
I’m having the same issue with my 2006/2007 F250TXR Yamaha. Here are some pictures I took of my thermostat. Might be similar…in my pictures, I’ve incorrectly identified my thermostat and the pressure relief valve/poppet.

I have two new thermostats, springs and seals…gonna install them this weekend…should be a piece of cake, given their location. This should take care of my alarm issues.
I got the new thermostat kits installed. One side was really clean, but the other side had some debris in it. I hope to get on the water soon to see if this fixed my issue.
I finally got the KW on the water to try to get the temp alarm to go off…I idled and ran at trolling speeds for an extended time (and caught a few fish while trolling)…no alarm. I’m guessing new thermostats fixed my issue. Big thanks to Chris V for the information I needed to get this project done.
