I have a 2003 Johnson 90 hp 2 stroke. Today, my temp. alarm went off a couple times. It only went off while I was at low rpms…I could run all day on plane and it was fine. I have water coming out of the “pee hole”, but I’m not sure if it’s as strong as it should be. Could this be a water pump issue ? Not enough pressure at low speeds / rpm ?

Could be pump not pushing enough at low rpm or partial blockage in water distribution … imo the pump

Is replacing a water pump a diy job ? It’s a bad time of year to take a boat in to a shop…not to mention the cost of a shop repair. I’ve never worked on an outboard before, but I am very mechanically inclined.

They’re not bad for the average capable mechanic…start on Youtube and if you feel comfortable, go for it.

Doing a water pump is straight forward IF and ONLY IF the foot unit has been off in the last couple of years. If the foot unit has not been dropped in a few years, the bolts can be seized. If they are, the job gets a lot more complicated.
Agree with Optiker. Get a manual for the motor and it’ll have step by step instructions. Easy to do. Get the rebuild kit, not just the impeller.

make sure and check pressure relief valve.
if the stick open slightly, motor will over heat at low rpms only

I had a 120 Johnson with VRO so you might consider that too. Do you remember the beep sequence? I still have the alarm sequence code sheet somewhere if you need it.
Changing the water pump is not hard but take note of the things mentioned above. The only problem I had was getting the bolt to disconnect the gear shift rod. I think everything else drops out after the bolts on the foot are removed.
Also the O-ring that seals the water pump section can be tricky. It fits in a grove on the top of the foot. If you don’t get a good seal the motor will eventually run hot at high RPMs…( and no I didn’t cause this but the last mechanic to work on it did!!! >:< )

Mark…what is VRO ? When the alarm went off, it was just a continuous, high pitch tone, with the temp light on the tachometer coming on.

Variable-Ratio Oiling - automatically mixes the oil at 50:1 I believe…
A continuous alarm is either over heating or fuel restriction

Well…called the dealer and got a price and time estimate on the repair…looks like I’m gonna give this thing a shot. I just ordered a water pump kit and everything else I will need…grease, gasket sealer, etc. I’m not sure if it would have made a difference, but I went with the Johnson OEM kit versus the aftermarket kit…about 20 bucks higher. I had an Amazon gift card I won at work so I’m only out of pocket 9 bucks. Everything should arrive by next Monday. While I’m in there, I’m gonna clean the thermostat and replace the plugs. Wish me luck.
