Casper, Brant and I got the Fountain in the water today for a break in. Everything checked out and we decided to run out a little ways and troll. Went to Y73 hoping to hone our skills and maybe pickup a king or two. Really did not expect to hook up with anything decent considering we are a bunch or rookies and running/ rigging this boat for the first time. Five minutes into the troll and a nice sail nailed the short corner. Jumped three times and we lost him. Rookies…not much more to say. Moved around a little and picked up a slinger dolphin. All in all a very good day on the water.
don’t guess anyone will be hitting coastal waters for the rest of week and weekend are there? any daring souls out there…i mean stupid ones? i wouldn’t go out in a battleship!
Yep, sail hit just at Y73 area. I know, we were surprised as well.
The Fountain (not mine, a very good friend from the upstate)is a 31 TE. The boat fished great. It doesn’t have a super wide beam but it has plenty of room in the back for a few knuckleheads. Nice 50 gallon round livewell and full transom. It doesn’t have as many fish boxes as some, but it has a large one (450 or so) under/in the console. The boat is solid and will flat eat up head sea chop. Found out quick that the boat likes to be run up on top. Rides much better at a little higher speed. Top speed is 64mph, pushing 65 on the gps. We don’t have a lot of expeience running a larger boat and it has been a learning curve for all. I expected her to be a little pitchy at rest, but she sits in the water very nice and doesn’t have the roll that some other “go fast” boats I have been on have at rest. All in all I am very impressed. -Eric
i have heard great things about how a fountain rides but not so good things about how fishable they are. just wondering what you thought. i know a guy who runs a 38’ but heard it it has some inconveniences when it comes to the actual fishing.
Catawba Football, why do you have such a hard time believing there are sails in that close? Are you a rookie or do you just not fish for them? If I am not mistaken, you can search this forum and find reports of them being caught as close as the Charleston 60 reef. If that doesn’t work, try the Hilton Head forum and search Betsy Ross. Maybe you are running PAST the sails at this point in the year, rookie.
I owned a 31 TE, 1996 model, had it for several years GREAT Boat!!! Tuna and Sail fish catching machine!! that Hull style has not changed since it’s birth. Not many Manufactures have that claim to fame!! Only my opinion, the TE ran so much better then the open model, not so much rattling. much more solid boat, it loved a 2-3 foot head sea, In a following sea,be very aware of the conditions as the bow points down a little and very likely to take a wave over the bow, you have to be good with the throttles driving it like a car. Had Fountain not made a 32’ with a 9.5 beam I would have that boat again.
Good Luck and congrats on a fine boat.
I saw Teddy Jacques catch a large sail inside the Charleston jetties in 1968. It was caught on a red and white cisco kid. He had it mounted and it was on his wall in Bayview until his death around 1990. Not sure what his daughter did with it. In the 1950’s and early 60’s, sails were caught quite often outside the jetties to C-2. I’m not sure what changed to push them out, possibly the areas pollution.

I dont think I gave any indication of having a hard time believing there were sails in so close, I was simply surprised. You see there is a diffrence. For example, I don’t have a hard time believing you have nothing better to do with your time than to berate someone for asking a simple question, I’m just surprised. And no, I dont fish for sails. I am sure they are a greal deal of fun to catch, however I typicly try to stick with fish I can eat later. And thirdly, yes I am a fairly new fisherman. I am 27 and have finally reached a point in my life that I can afford a boat which allows me to go offshore. I do still have much to learn. Name call if you wish, but I shall continue to ask questions and perhaps one day I can be as skilled as you. Thanks.
Well I am very new to offshore fishing. Is it true that Sails come that close frequently or is it the exception. I would like to try and catch one if the weather will ever settle down. I just thought I had to run out to 200’-300’ to find them.
55’ can be a good sail #. Tee2Sea had one hooked up in 43’ this year…i think he lost it cause he was dodging the jet ski’s and parasailers…
Sprig is slightly off. I had him in my sights, about 30 feet of my starboard side heading right in. Through a spanish and he was gone. Someone did catch one in the same spot last Sat. during Brunswick King tournament. 41 ft of water when I saw the spindlebeak.
Hydra, they seem to show up closest to shore in August and early Sept. Lots of rain minnows and spanish. probably lure them in this close along woth water temp.
