testing flies

ok. dont wanna sour any purists but some days its too windy for me to fling the long rod and i still like to see how the stuff i tie will work in the grass. i break out the spinning gear and use a carolina rig or just beads in front of a fly, which works ok but its not quite the same action since its pulling along the bottom. any body figured out a test system that gives good results?
thanks

Hutch, try it! who cares? to each his own…split shot the helloutta it! …ever try a bigger rod in the wind? 9/10? aggressive line choices (overline…to shoot- underline…to force tight loops) or simply have your redfish speyed

Indoors; sink or bathtub.

Outdoor; Leeward side of a barrier island. I have some fishing places that are between tree lines. One side windy and one side calm.

Casting in strong wind is good practice.

exactly… i think the last time the Bahama’s bonefush have seen >5kts , Michael Jackson was black

Well....

I would use a different ‘pop’ reference but, that is just me.

Yep, get out in the wind and throw those flies. Remember, the wind is not blowing UNDER the water.

I test new flies in the sink, then at the water’s edge, then in open water. The sink works plenty well, though.

I test mine in a fish tank that’s got a pet smallmouth bass in it. If he shows some interest in it, it will likely work. If the pet turtle tries to eat it, then fly will definitely work!

If it’s really windy I like to throw a shooting head. They have a thin diameter and are much heavier and will cut right through the wind. Granted, your fly is going to be on the bottom during the retrive

There is no normal life, there’s just life.
