I have a new to me 40 HP Merc.(1994)
Generally runs fine, but even when warmed up, it was cutting off at idle speed while ‘in gear’, and would not want to restart w/out lifting the advance lever.
Chris suggested I check the ‘idle timing adjustment’, and what do you know, he hit it right on the head. The little rubber tip on that particular adjuster was squashed flat, so was travelling too far reducing the spec timing position, and was easily adjusted.
I also adjusted the top end timing, as I felt the engine had more to give at WOT.
Now, just a quick touch of the key, and off I go.
