thanks murrymaker

Thanks to murraymaker for the fun trip yesterday morning. it took us all of about 90 minutes to catch our three man limit. most were in the 7-10# range. fun time but it did not last long enough. can hardly wait to head out again. thanks again chip.

You never have that problem when I take you out. I make sure you get plenty of time, lol.

I’d like to thank Chip for letting me “follow” him out Sunday. I didn’t have the luck you guys had, but caught 3 three nice ones. My trouble was, that after each fish, I would have to try to get back to where I caught them (no spot lock). After the third fish, I couldn’t seem to find them again. I’m still learning how to use & read my GPS/sonar. But, it was nice to kill the skunk that has been with me the past few times.

COOLBREEZE, it was good to meet you. Another screen name I can put a face to.

Bob you could have come up right beside I wouldn’t have minded…I would recommend getting you a marker. They sell them at wally world or sportsmans. Or just get a big float. Put a large amount of lead on a 100’+ of line and tie it to the float. When u find them drop the marker. That way its easier to get back to your spot. They sell the whole kits at sportsmans I think

Bob, I don’t have spot lock either, so I use a marker or I anchor. Most of them will only come with about 50’ of string on them, so be sure to add some if you pick one up.

Yeah, I thought about a marker while I was fishing Sunday morning. I told myself to buy one after reading Tim’s post from the last week or so. I just never thought about it at the right time. As a matter of fact, I was just at Wally world about 15 minutes ago to pick up a case of beer and didn’t even think about looking for a marker float. As far as anchoring, I only have about 150’ of anchor rope, so I don’t think that would have worked in 90’-100’ of water. I’m just happy I finally caught some fish.

Chip, If I see you out there again, I might just come up next you. I just like to give some space to other anglers. Some guys are kind of funny about someone pulling up and fishing right next to them. Thanks for the offer.

Happy Bob; at least you picked up the right stuff at the store. you can always go back for the markers.

Yeah, gotta make sure there’s beer in the fridge at all times. I hate getting home from work at 11:30pm just to realize I’m out because I forgot to buy some that morning.

As far as the markers, I got a couple of ideas off the internet and am going to make one. I’ve got everything I need in the garage, pvc pipe, glue, pool noodle and string. I’ll test it next weekend, weather permitting.

Did you see this idea??

Foam Pool Noodle
1/2" PVC Pipe
1/2" PVC Caps
PVC Glue & Primer
Tape Measure
A saw to cut the pipe
A knife to cut the noodle
Nylon Cord
4 oz Fishing Weights

I used 1/2" PVC pipe because that’s what fit into the hole in the noodle I had on hand. They come in various sizes so match your pipe to the size that fits into the noodle you have.

I’m real interested in how well the do-it-yourself markers work out
Let us know.

Me too!
That’s the site that I found. I changed it up a bit by making the noodle the full length on the pvc pipe, for more floatation and I figure the string will make it’s own indent in the noodle as I wrap it up. Also my noodle was blue, so I painted it with neon orange paint to make it more visible.

Something to remember when using round floats, is the wind can blow them and unravel the line causing the float to move further from your spot until the line is down to the knot. Using a flat float will prevent this or tie the line off with a slip not say 10’ deeper than your bottom depth.

Edit: if u dont want to tie a slip knot. put a pvc T on one end or both ends to stop this. Sometimes it may take a little more lead to spin the line off but the wind wont be able to. Of course cap the T’s. But by this time the money u have spent if u didnt have everything around the house it would have prob been cheaper to buy one…lol…

The ones you buy usually have weights inside them that keep the line from unraveling once the weight hits bottom. I can see making one if you just enjoy piddling with stuff and already have the materials, but I don’t think you will come out ahead making them if you don’t. I believe the one I use was $8.

One thing you may want to consider, whether you make one or buy one, is to pick up some of the little glow sticks from WM that come with the holders that go on a rod tip and glue the holder to the bouy. When fishing past dark, or even close to dark, it can be much harder to find the bouy than you would think no matter what color you make it. Add the glow stick while it’s still light and you will have no problem finding it later. Once you throw your marker you ane not always going to fish right up on it. You may find fish a ways off the marker, but it still helps alot as a visable reference point when you are in open water even if you do have a gps. Knowing that you can find it after dark will keep you from feeling like you have to stay right next to it as it turns dark.

I had the exact same thought when Happy Bob first brought up the idea of a home made marker. I was hoping his was going to be “H” shaped to prevent it from letting out more line from a passing boat wake or waves.

Some of the first marker bouys I saw were of that geometry, made by Tom Mann back in the early 70’s.

I think I’ve got about $2.00 and 20 minutes invested right now. I’m going to stick some weight in one side to hopefully keep the line from from spooling off. If it doesn’t work, oh well, I’m off to Sportsmans Warehouse to pick one up.

They have the flat ones at Lake World, too … but I’m not sure how much they want for them …

The flat squares will also flip and spin off extra line in rough waters. However, this is to a much lesser degree than the barbel shaped buoys. I’ve had those spin off all they’re line in pretty shallow water. The only time I’ll use buoys is when I totally loose my mind and decide to double anchor and cutbait:smiley: I’m so thankful for my Ipilot:sunglasses:
