Glad to hear everything turned out ok and you are back safely.
Good to hear. How did you contact the Coast Guard?
The Coast Guard men and women I’ve met seemed professional and totally committed to their mission. My concern has not been their response but how to reach them, especially from that distance.
First, glad you got back.
If I may ask, what kind of engine? Diesel or gas…inboard/OB??? The reason I ask because you state:
“So i put new one on but didnt prime filter with gas before installing.”
Did you not have a primer bulb?
And don’t be offended but did the Coast Guard say you would be billed? I know that sounds crass, but, I’m interested in the logistics.
12 volt fuel pump w/switch on tee with valve and whip hose before filter. Gives you the ability to pump a little in a cup/bottle/fill the filter before installing. Much safer than having a jug of gas bumping around… Glad everything worked out and everyone is home safe.

yahamma 250 and yes there was primer bubble didnt pump up
I’ll preface this by I been drinking.
I believed that the Coast Guard wouldn’t respond unless there was a risk to life. I was wrong.
I answered my own questions about the Coast Guard. I’ll post the links for the edification of Pea Pod:

http://www.thelog.com/ask-the-attorney/does-the-coast-guard-charge-for-rescues-or-assistance/
http://content.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1892621,00.html
I’ll allow the reading to sink in about the costs.
This isn’t to hurt anyone’s feelings. I believe a MB is for discussion. If you got fuel in a boat…you ought to be able to get it to your engine…IMO.
I see all these posts about buddy boats. That is a person that understands the risk. Being prepared for problems may save you and your crews’ life. What are you going to do when that engine quits in 4 foot seas because you got water in your fuel. I don’t care how prompt the Coast Guard is…I want control of my boat.
I check my Racor Fuel Filter every hour and when I switch tanks, every couple of minutes…water goes to the lowest point in your gas tank…( *pro tip from skinneejwhitebread.com). It has a clear bottom so you can see any water. You can also drain it without breaking the vacuum on the fuel line. You can also drip the water while running which I did for about 20 miles on a bad tank of fuel. Worth the extra money.
One learns by experience…hopefully. I carry one or two of everything I might need. I don’t want to depend on anybody other than myself. When I need the Coast Guard…I hope they’re not busy.
Glad we could help. I happened to be coordinating that case. I was amazed your VHF was making contact, although limited. Stay safe out there!

EPIRBs are pretty effective. Pricey, but worth every penny if you ever need it.
