Got my motor today and am about halfway through the break-in. I’m really pleased! It’s smooth as silk and full of power. I never thought I’d get almost 48 mph out of a 150 on a 22 foot boat. Today’s motors sure are something!
Look forward to seeing you back in action Fog. But I will miss you fishing with me.
One recomendation that was passed on to me for my Yamaha is to continue to run regular Yamaha Lube oil even after the break in oil change. Then at 100 hours when you change the oil again, switch to the Yamaha Synthetic oil. The synthetic is apparently so smooth it can keep the rings from seating properly if you use it too early. But I can tell you after I switched to Synthetic at 100 hours it was unreal how smooth the motor ran.
Also do yourself a favor and get a good oil extractor if you don’t have one, it makes the oil changes so simple. Or you are welcome to use mine if you would like.
One other tip, go ahead and check your oil level now. The dealer had over filled mine by almost a full quart. I was worried it was making oil but he had just way over filled it.
Tiger, thanks for all the good info. I will keep all you wrote in mind. The tech was very thorough in going over the engine with me this morning. We checked the oil, and he told me you want it to read right in the middle of the dipstick. That’s where it was.
As far as I’m concerned, we ain’t done fishing together-- your boat or mine. I’d be more than happy to show you some things I’ve learned about those Clark’s Hill fish, and you’ve already schooled me on what can be done with your secret blade bait. We’ll get together from time to time.
Good to see you have the hardest part almost over with, and are happy with your new motor. But from what I have seen on Yamaha.com the synthetic is for the SHO motors. The others are to run regular Yamaha motor oil. The dealer I bought my 4 stroke from told me unless I ran it at least once a week put regular oil in it. just my 2 cents
They both usually average a trip per week. I enjoyed riding in the Xpress today and was surprised by how fast it jumped on plane. That’s a strong running motor! Hope Fogman can get another 31 years of service out of this Yamaha too.
Thanks guys! Bob, I did pause my break-in for about 10 or 15 minutes to catch a fish-- a hog perch that had to weigh at least a pound or so. Then, it was time to head back to the dam from Acapulco. I covered at least 60 miles yesterday and only burned 13 gallons of gas. Wow!
As for motor oil and gear lube, I’m trusting the techs at Mid-Carolina while it’s under warranty. By 2023, I’ll be diy-ing it.

James, how does this compare to the 175? Just curious.
-The size of a fish is directly proportional to the time between when it’s lost and the story is told. - Me
-What’s the best eating fish, you ask? I’ve found that for a lot people, its the ones that they happen to be able to catch, clean, and cook. - My Dad (1/13/37 - 9/27/16 I love you Pops)
-Until you have loved a dog, part of your soul remains unawakened. Anatole France (paraphrased)
-RIP my “Puppy Dog” 10/15/2004 - 1/14/2013. I’ll never forget him. What a special friend he was.

I do have a 250 SHO so I very easily could be giving you the wrong advise for the F150. My Dad and I both had F150’s that we only used regular Yamaha Lube oil in with no issues for years. Yamaha didn’t have a synthetic back then so I’m not sure what their guidelines are now for motors other than mine. Sorry if I steered you wrong.

I get 48 - 50 on our boat if it’s just me and it’s empty of all gear …
Fully loaded (+ one person, all our gear, full 55 gallon bait tank, and full 40 gallon live well) I’ll get between 40 and 45 depending on water conditions …
Our Yamaha 150 is almost 14 years old and has over 1,000 hours …

You’re not wrong on the synthetic oil advice … I did the same thing after the break in period and I have only used synthetic oil since … I will also use the Yamalube Ring Free fuel additive on every 3rd tank, but that has only been since I crossed 500 hours on the motor …
Charles, it’s way stronger than my old 175! The best I could get out of my old one is 5200 and a top speed of 43. Furthermore, I filled it up yesterday. I covered I figure around 60 miles Saturday. The outing started at dam. I meandered all over Beaverdam. From there, it was off to Crystal then over to Acapulco to pick up Spoon. From there, we went up to marker 23 across from Hawleek. I dropped off Spoon and was back to the Big Pool where I did more riding around. Bottom line is I only burned 13 gallons of gas! At that rate, the F150 will pay for itself. The old one loved fuel a little too much.
Needless to say, I’m tickled and feel I made the right choice. Thanks to all for the well wishes and advice.

Good deal and happy for you, James. Personally, I would’ve been in a serious state of depression without a boat, especially now with my career change.

It was eating at me Charles. Though I also enjoy fishing with others in their boats from time to time, I get a lot of relief from the stresses of the job and life in general by getting out at least once a week as the captain of my own ship. I was actually starting to have panic and anxiety over things that usually barely bother me otherwise. Jennifer used her psychology degree training to point that out too me .
Seems ridiculous, but I’m way more chill having been out in my boat after 2 plus months and by just having it in the backyard.
I know exactly what you mean Fog. I spend my whole week at work looking forward to the day each weekend I get to slip away and go fishing. My wife had a bunch going last weekend and I didn’t think I was going to get to go and I was down and kind of snappy at work all week. Then by Thursday she let me know I could go on Sunday after all and I was a new man.
