The jetties

Thinking about heading to the jetties this weekend if the weather is right. I was wondering if anybody has been doing anything lately? Any tips are appreciated, I haven’t been out there in over a year. Thanks Guys

they will hit literally anything from shrimp to fingermullet to mudminnows to cutbait… they are everywhere

Went yesterday-fished the flood
-2 keeper Whiting
-1 small BSB
-several sharks-largest 30"s
-1 28" red
-a mystery fish that almost striped my reel and cut off at the hook(large ray, shark?)
-fishing in 32’
-CG inspection on the way home-passed

Seems smaller fish stay around the rocks.
There are some BIG fish nearer the channel.
The red we caught had a hook and leader from a previous incident in its mouth-tackle had broken at swivel.
We always rig for the big stuff-even so there are large rays, reds and sharks out there which will break even that.

Just curious as to what they look for in a CG inspection, have had SCDNR checks before but never CG

you can always catch something at the jetties. and if it’s a calm day head out to the Nearshore reef, it’s only about a mile passed the jetties

Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

Fished the jetties one time and caught…one 3 pound black drum and nothing else. Must have been the worst jetties trip of all time!

NOTE: Nearshore reef is over 5 miles past dynamite hole. Still pretty close.

I think we got the full treatment! (Maybe part of a training exercise?)
As we were heading home, we passed a large cutter off Sullivan’s. Hidden behind the cutter, like a cop behind a billboard, was the smaller boat with four coasties on board. They pulled us over for a routine saftey inspection-two of the four boarded my boat-they were heavily armed.
-first question-“Are there any firearms on board?” Not in my case.
-life preservers
-throw cushions
-boat papers-SC drivers license, boat reg, insurance etc
-fire extinguisher
-fish on board? (we had none.)
-did boat head pump overboard
-had I ever taken a boat training course? No,but after I explained that I have spent 60 of my 73 years on the water in all sorts of craft, conditions and places-he seemed satisfied.
-they noted the # of my GPS-have no idea why
Think that’s all.
They were most polite and respectful; we were given a summary of our report which is good for a year.
If boarded again during that time by the CG, the report will suffice-no second inspection needed.

a guy i today caught a 400#black tip… so I heard and was sent a text of fish…so who knows… but yeah plenty of fish lots of BSB’s big reds, sharks, just bring lots of weight the current moves

SC record blacktip is 163lbs.

world record caught in kenya 27 years ago was 270lbs.

did they check for flares?

Yes, they did check for flares.

Same happened to me a few years ago. I second the heavily armed. Pretty intimidating. Guys were polite and it was relatively quick.

Can anyone give the best route to take to reach the jettys? I normally put in @ Remleys, but also I am coming from St George. Maybe there is a better landing to launch from. Just dont want to get stuck on a and bar. Normally i will fish up the Wando or around the Ravenell, just never really tried to get to the jettys. Thanks yall.

fish today work tomorrow

Just follow the shipping channel and you’re there…

I love shark fishing. Whats the general size and how do yall fish for them at the jetties? just a plain this leader, or wire leader on cut bait on the bottom?? I’ve always wanted to land a big blacktip or something along those lines.

you dont need to go out to the jetties to catch big sharks. i usually have 65lb braid and 200lb flouro leader (b/c thats all i have at the moment) 5/0 circle hook on the bottom. croaker as bait, cut the head and tail off or use it live and put a few slits in its side.

I’m curious to know what “heavily armed” means. How armed were they? Shotguns? Carbines? Belt fed machine guns? Grenades?

Body armor, 9mm handguns, club, radio, their Zodiac may have had additional weapons on board-30cal, m-16s, grenades,105mm recoilless rifle-I have no idea. The cutter was nearby with 50cals and heaven knows what else; and, I am sure was on call if needed.

Went back to the jetties Friday and caught mostly sharks-highlighted by a 4’-5’ Bonnethead and a similar sized Sharpnose-both good fights on medium tackle.

Fishing lines got rubbed by jellyfish! Crew got stings on hands from the residue and I got stung on my face from blowback from casting.

Never a dull moment on the big blue sea.
