What is it? I first thought it was the stream, but seems like “the ledge” is much closer. Thanks
It’s just what the word says. Ledge as in a drop off
WOW!! Thanks FH. Huge help! Anyone else pls
Any man that doesn’t know how to catch a fish, shouldn’t disgrace a fish, by catching it.
The gulf stream is a south to north warm water current coming up from the carribean. It moves east and west with temprature changes. The ledges is the continental shelf. This is how it was explained to me years ago. If im remembering something wrong please correct me.
The ledge is not the continental shelf. The ledge is where the bottom has an average drop from 160-200 ft. It is about 45-50 nm straight out of the jetties and parallels the coast. Out of Charleston it is from SW Banks to Edisto Banks. It is also scattered with live bottom “reef”. Its a great starting point for your fishing day! Hope this helps.

If you are bottom fishing around Edisto Banks make sure you know where the Marine Protected area is. No bottom fishing there.
Yeah, The Ledge is where the contour of the bottom starts to drop off quickly. You run for 35 miles from the beach to hit only 100 feet. You get to about 40ish miles to see 120 feet. After that, it get’s deeper faster. This area, like LOWCOUNTRY said, that runs parallel to the beach (but 50ish miles out) is “The Ledge.”
THATS what I was looking for. Thank you.

Thanks for the correction. What I was thinking of is continental slope. And that might not be right either. If not how far out is the continental slope?
Pretty good picture of the topography off off SC.

I have always been under the impression the “ledge” is where the continental shelf transitions into the continental slope…at least thats what the biologists/scientist have told me. I happen to know one really well:wink:
Pick up a “Maps Unique” chart at your favorite tackle shop for the charleston area. These charts are some of the best for defining our offshore areas and show much of all the live bottom out there with coordinates. Many good areas of live bottom or “reef” along the ledge. Typical target area for wahoo and other pelagics.
