The Ledge

Finally went Offshore Friday. 1 hit, ripped the ballyhoo in half. Thats all we had. I assume we were in the wrong spot. With that being said, is the Comanche Reef a good spot to troll for Wahoo and Dolphin with skirted ballyhoo? Also, can someone please point me to the ledge. We went straight east from the jetties about 40 miles or so. How much further should we have gone and whats the drop-off depth?

It’s this way: <------------------

Oh wait… Sorry, I had my mapsunique upside down. It’s actually that way: ------------------>

I will try to answer you seriously. The “Ledge” that I believe you are referring to is 42.5nm straight out(135deg magnetic)from the offshore end of the Chas Jettys. That would be about 47.5 statute miles if your chartplotter is configured in such a fashion. The Edisto banks(much more relief/structure)is 44nm @ 160deg mag.You were likely inshore of the main ledge and in 140ft or so I would imagine. The dropoff is from around 155ft to 180ft according to where you are.It slopes off quickly to 200ft and is a gradual slope from there out to around 350ft where it falls off faster as you head offshore.Try trolling from 140-300ft in May and June with hoos and skirts. You will catch fish.

The Comanchee is about 30nm out and about 100’ of water. You are more likely to get barracuda then wahoo or dolphin there at this time of year.
