the paddle rod swap???

so for those of you who stand in your yak and paddle to sight fish for reds i have a question.
How do you put your paddle down and pick your rod up after you spot a fish??? i have had this happen numerous times and i always seem to spook the fish. I wouldnt see the fish if i wasnt standing so i am not sure what the solution is. maybe a paddle clip to the belt or something. ideas???

I have a scotty rod holder extender that sticks up about a foot so I keep my rod there and when I see a fish I squat down and put my paddle down across the kayak and pick up my rod. It only takes me a second and I’ve never had any issues.

I put my paddle in the paddle holder along side the yak. Then I stand and use my push pole/stick it anchor to pole along. When I see a fish, I either stick the anchor in to hold me in place or lay it across the yak and cast. Seems to work for me.

I use a paddle clip belt that I have made. I just clip the paddle at my waist and grap the pole from the rod holder.

i think the waist clip is the winner. will report on success or lack there of

Ok, so not that I’ve been able to stalk any reds lately (stupid wind every time I’m out prevents me from seeing into the water, or being blown at mach 5 across the water), but… I did figure this out. I bought two for my kayak and one works great. I took the other one, put it on my wader belt, and it clips on very easily and securely! So it’s very similar to the one that was recommended without any fabrication.

Nice…Where did you locate that clip?

I fought them on ebay. They’re called “yakclips”

Thanks. I will have to look them up.

I use a Superstick Push Pole instead of a paddle. It gives me more control by being able to stop once i spot the fish. The rod sits in the rod holder in front of me on an extender until I am ready for it. After that the push pole goes under my arm and helps keep me in place.

Thanks Last@Sea…I have been looking at the Superstick Push Pole. It seems like a lot to carry on a regular kayak that uses a paddle when you consider the gear as well.
