Weather Wise it was Perfect…
I threw everything but the kitchen sink and got two fish today. I have never cast so many different artificials to so many fish in one day. I have no idea how I actually caught the two I did, but they were both slot fish, good for tourneys. Even tossed a couple mud minnows into no less then 75 reds, not even a wink from any of the fish.

Not that it helps you any but, it helps those of us that are still learning when we see that a Capt. can have a rough day too. You still got out there which beats my day today. I have looked out the window a 100 times today wondering what the weather was like down there today.
that sucks! it was perfect but sometimes those fish just dont bite. i bet live shrimp would have had all those fish biting though
There is no greater fan of fly fishing than the mud minnow.
I have learned thru the years that by this time of “winter” the fish have gotten much smarter due to the pressure they have seen on a daily basis. Schools get hammered day in and day out by multiple boats and they learn not to eat everything thrown at them. Much better results in the early parts of “winter”

“I have tomorrow open!”
Had a similar day. Did not see any fish but i know that they had to be around my spots since they usually are there. I may have put too much pressure on those fish the past few weeks. Had flipper in a few of my spots too. Guess he beat me to them today. We Fished hard and ended up getting only one today.

I was in the same area and had similar results with the fly. At first light they were gulping glass minnows pretty well but weren’t doing it in range of my guys. Always nice to see em eating things on the surface in the winter though. They did finally eat the EP glades special, but we had flies in 1000 fish today with poor results.
I think glass minnows and what Fritz said are the culprit. Glass minnows are out there by the billions, will have to pull out my secret glass minnow bait. They get the taste of Gulp and maybe think twice about eating it again. I think that is why mostly second year class reds will still hit the artificials, they have never tasted it before.
Did not take any natural bait on purpose, just to see. Had a few leftover minnows. Will never know if mullet/crab would work, but I bet it would have. Just glad it was not a charter.

Fished three days this week…water was super clear and I found myself thinking it was June-uary with the temps in the 70’s. ;). Could see bottom everywhere we went…guess fish could see us too because we did a lot of running and searching to find them…and even then…as you said…the bite as slow or none…but at least we were able to get out there right?

It doesn’t feel AS bad when you realize the pros have a tough time too sometimes, although you still caught two on an “off” day. I’ll be calling you soon to schedule a trip.
