I got home from work about 6pm yesterday, and nobody was home. About 7 pm I decided what the heck I am going to go fishing. Was on a flat about 720 pm. I saw a fish tailing as I made it to the flat, and wouldn’t you know it he broke my spoon fly off. I quickly tied on one of my crab patterns and hooked up again within minutes.
Saw another fish tailing while I was landing him. Within 30 seconds of releasing the first fish I had hooked up with fish 3 which was the second I landed.
Within about 5 minute of that fish I had number 4 on, the third that I landed.
I had another fish working within a few minutes of releasing that one. I made a cast and he nailed the fly and started to run, and broke me off. I brought in my line and he had broken my fly line itself. I did a field expedient repair (surgeons loop on the end of the fly line), tied on a new leader and tippet and a gold crab pattern.
I had two fish swimming together behind me, and I cast right in front of both…slam another fish on. The fish went one way, and my line stayed in place, he had me wrapped around some grass or something, and broke me off. Tied on my last gold crab pattern and started looking for another fish.
I saw another fish tailing about 80 yards away and started working that way. The water was about 2.5 feet deep where the fish was and his tail was sticking out of the water. I made about a 40 foot cast and he hammered it. Immediately took me to my backing, and then did it again. When I finally got it in it was a brute 33 1/3 inches long .
It was on this AM too!
First time this season for me and hooked up with 7 fish this AM.
Don’t know why but the 2nd-5th fish all ran, were on the reel then spit the fly!
Anyway, biggest was over 30"…saw one tailing on the outside that was 35+"…couldn’t make it happen.
That was a great hour of fishing, John. Will be hard to match. I was out on the midday tides Fri and Sun (dodging thunder storms)and saw very little. I could hear and sometimes see the fish in the tall grass but they didn’t seem interested in coming into the short grass where there were plenty of fiddlers. Do you think it’s the warm water during the day that’s keeping them off? We got a couple but it was slim pickin’s.
BTW, this is my first post so I hope it comes through.
Had a decent weekend, the fish were cooperative and present, just did not hold up my end of the bargin too well. Started Saturday strong, went out to a flat on the kayak, and saw a fish in the tall grass. Made several casts trying to get my fly down in the tall …and slam fish on. It was a nice 27 inch fish and my line held as he ran all over in the tall grass.
After that it was not as good. Saw another fish in the same area and with about 7 cast could not get the fly down and he dissappeared. Moved to another spot on the same flat and there were fish there, but moving and I had no luck. I should have picked up one if not two. Moved back to the original spot, and the water was too deep. Had one fish swim right up to the kayak before spooking.
I then started to work my way back down the flat. I had a fish about six feet off the kayak. Looked like a nice fish, tail just showing in about 2 feet of water. I made a cast as I was backing away from the fish and he nailed it. started to run and I thought I had broken him off. Turns out that he had pulled out the nail knot and taken my leader, tippet and fly.
Made a field expedient repair, and continued to fish. Saw two other fish, but never was able to make a cast prior to them dissappearing.
Sunday went to another spot with a friend to fish while moving around the flat in Kayaks. Saw about 4 or five on the main river edge, but no good shot. Moved up onto the flat as the water started, and ran into a bunch of puppy drum tailing. They were very skittish, I watched one swim right up to another one, and they both spooked, spooking another two or three on there way off of the flat. About this time the heavens opened up. It was raining so hard that you couldn’t see 20 feet in front of you.
Waited out the heaviest portion of the rain, then started fishing ag
