The skinnee for 05-30-2008 (attack of the donkeys)

Well, my first fishing trip after a 6 day binge in Cabo. My mind is still scattered and I haven’t trolled in weeks. None-the-less, I had some guys come in from Ashville to fish with me and I could not let them down. It was at sea that I figured out that half of my rigs did not have pins on them, and that I had to search high and low to find the most simple of rigging equipment. I never got more than 5 lines out all day. If it wasn’t the donkeys, it was fish swallowing hooks and having to cut them out and re-rig. If it wasn’t that, it was a popped mainline or a chaffed leader. I was sweatting my ass off and didn’t get the first bite of bojangles dirty rice until well after lunchtime. I was working my ass off and fishing didn’t seem as fun as usual. At least the fish were biting though. We just picked at the dolphin all day catching them 1 and 2 at a time but they added up. They weren’t bad sized ones. Only caught 1 peanut all day and had plenty of 20-25lb gaffers mixed in there. Around 11:30 or so, the wind started picking up out of the NE to 15+ knots and was very steady. I realized that I didn’t have anything packed to spend any time on a ship, so we picked up to call it a day. The dolphin were still biting heavy and we could have wiped them out commercial style. We started heading in and I noticed that the whitecaps were laying down a little and we stopped on the ledge just a few miles from where we picked up. It was there we put back out our killer 5 line spread and got some bites right off the bat. We could not tell what it was as an enourmous brown blob of fish were headed up to the boat? WTF is it??? Sharks? Sharks eating something? Sharks eating each other? No… It was about that time I saw the bill and pec fin of our sailfish and he was being prison humped by amberjacks. There were dozens of them and they were all over the sail for some reason. Got the sail up to the boat and one of the ashville guys said, “DO YOU WANT ME TO GET THE GAFF!!!” I said, "No man, we are letting thi

You need to get that alcohol out of your system. It’s a young man’s game!

Good day nonetheless. That’s a lot of fish. Congrats.

Peace And Ease

Everyone should believe in something, I believe I’ll go fishing !!!

Try running pink stretch 25+'s and you won’t pick up so many bronzefins…

I wonder how the SAFMC feels about their powerhead prohibition for SC in order to save the AJ’s? I say if they think there is a problem with beeliners, then the problem is because of AJ predation. Keep some AJ’s next time and check their stomachs for those folks’ peace of mind.

Thanks for reminding me. I meant to write a note to thank the SAFMC for saving the AJ fishery that is obviously in such terrible condition. I thank God every day that I get to weed through 20+ of them on a trolling trip. I love converting balleyhoos into AJ's and it's all because of the one fish limit that we so desperately needed! Thanks SAFMC!!!
