Worst day we have had in a long time. Had some radar troubles in the morning as it was off by about 90 degrees. Had to spend about 20 minutes to adjust that and then we headed on.
Started out at the Skinnee West Banks and picked up a slinger dolphin. Had some fish about 5-6’ long sprint at one of our flat lines, but couldn’t quite tell what it was but had a black back (wahoo? sail?). It was a streak and then gone. Headed out to the deep in 1000’ towards the Skinnee Bubble Rock and found a beautiful edge. It had everything you wanted = color change, well formed weedline, 1 degree temperature change, wood, a 50 gallon drum covered in barnacles, a pallet, flyers all over, and birds. Only one thing was missing, and that was hungry fish. This thing went on for miles with no end in site. Anyway, it didn’t matter. We snatched a 27lb dorado off of it and somehow my guys managed to break a leader on a 20+lb fish just next to the boat. They also pulled the hook on another one while trying to gaff it, but I wasn’t really sure if it was a mahi or a dolphin. Ended up heading back in to the Skinnee Town Hole to finish the day looking for a tuna bite. Reeled in a nice barracuda. Caught a mahi right at the end of the day as well. Overally a crappy day. Thank goodness the tournament doesn’t start until 8am because nobody wants to catch the early bite anyway. Usually we are fishing while the older guys are marching around in their tighty whiteys sipping on coffee and glazed donuts from dunkin’s.
Oh well, ended up with a green man slam with:
1 dolphin
1 dorado
1 mahi
PS I called out on the VHF that our dorado weighed 26-27lbs. The final weight was 27.4. Didn’t stretch it out across the sailfish23 dock boards to get a measurement though.
