Phin, How did you convert the loran numbers to GPS??

You can use a navy program called posaid2, but it will only get you within a few hundred feet if not more. I can change the coordinate system on my GPS and tell it to use loran C. You must put the system on on (Y)yankee (Z)zulu and make sure to set the chain on 7980 so that it will be on the right grid. Then, you can put the loran numbers in as waypoints and change your coordinate system back to NAD83(usually) and degrees/min like normal. Then go look at the waypoints you entered and the lat/long will be displayed.
There are offset values to do the conversions where they will be exactly right, and there are a couple programs that will do it like offshore hunter and another one I can’t remember. The reason for the offset is because loran lines shoot straight off line, but the earth is round. The offset will be different for somewhere 20 miles offshore than something 10 miles further at the same bearing.
CharlestonDiving will do it and give you the exact coordinates if you give him your numbers too. I would offer to do it, but I am only able to get 50-100’ from what it is right now if that, and I wouldn’t ask you to give up your numbers for that.

You guys go break some release laws. Until then, Greg and I will just fish legally.
I for one am very thankful that you guys are keepin’ it legal. That’s how you roll. The same way Johnny Cothran got OJ off.

PS Earlier in that same thread you mention, I even willingly admitted to doing the same thing before I knew about the law. At least use that one against me.

Then who were you talking about? Skinee’s the one who posted the report.

Looks to me like you’re talking to the poster of the report.
If you weren’t talking to me then when you said, “these guys” I guess that that’s yankee talk for meaning “only one of you”??? Also, it was a little misleading when you replied after quoting something I said. I guess we are cool then.
I just wish that this topic would end up like that sailfish… Belly up and floating off in the current so we never have to see it again…
Or should we say cobia:smiley:

No. I meant kill.
What don’t you get about it?
What they don’t understand is that those of us that untilize the resources are usually the only ones who care about the resources. i.e. The CCA and the FRA etc. etc.
Fishing is new to most of these guys and now that they’ve caught some MahiDorado fish and their first billfish they don’t need any advice from anyone.
Just give them a few years and if they’re still fishing they’ll see what’s really going on, but in the meantime, I’ll keep trying to educate.

You need to learn how to use the internet. The quote feature is very easy to use and your replies are unnecessarilly confusing.
Now, what do you need explained?
I think he is referring to the low-lifes who take fish out of the water for pics then release them.
Not the good guys who leave them swimming away in #60 worth of jewelry.

Yes, in the above quote, I was refering to people who most likely kill a fish they have no intentions of eating.
Compared to an unfortunate turn of events where a targetted game fish was lost due to poor luck and possible error on my part when placing a second spear into the fish.
No true hunter is ever happy with wounding an animal, but to compare some newbies killing a fish for a photo to me losing a fish at the gaff is simply not an apples to apples comparison.
Oh I see. I think what is happening here is that Big Easy is accusing greg of not being “conservation minded” because you let a fish get away wounded. In his mind, pulling a sailfish in a boat and taking pictures of it is just as accidental as not being able to retrieve game that you shot.
Greg, just admit it. It’s pretty obvious that you never intended to eat that fish or put it on your stringer for that matter. You were just going to pull out your shaft and leave it sitting on the sand, weren’t you?
Just let them have the sailfish argument. They want to win that one pretty badly. Instead, let’s talk about how wounding a fish with a spear is different from floating a short “released” bottom fish that you rapidly cranked up from 180’. I want to see how that one plays out.
You guys win the sailfish argument. Okay, there, I said it. Pulling the fish out of water, although technically against federal law, is better than leaving it in the water. You WIN!!!
