Headed out with 4 of us yesterday including the infamous Edisto Fisher. He is alive and well and still has the mojo when it comes to breaking off nice red snappers. We got a pretty late start yesterday after having some issues with leaky steering fluid, but managed to get lines in by 11am.
We got a box full of monster triggers and a 4 man limit of vermillions. Vermillions were plentiful and we threw back another 5-6 limits of them. I think I remember only seeing 1-2 fish that were actually smaller than the legal size. Also, my buddy Dean get’s rocked up on a fish to the point where he stops the boat from drifting. We are basically at anchor on 80lb braid for about 15 minutes and he refuses to give up on this fish. I’m very impatient and was trying to talk him into just breaking it off, but he wouldn’t hear it. So, as soon as I lose interest, he starts yelling “HE’S OUT, HE’S OUT!!!” A minute or two later, he put’s a 19.6 lb Gag on the deck. Edisto Fisher also put several nice 10-12lb ARS on the deck.
We did a couple of dives on some virgin territory and couldn’t believe the life down there. Hundreds of dinner plate size triggers, big vermillions, millions of cigar minnows, grunts, etc. There was a resident school of about 30 fat gags, but they would not let us close the gap on them. There were probably 100 scamps down there as well all around the 20-22" range. Water was crystal clear. Never even got a shot at a gag on that spot. Oh well, I guess sometimes you can’t just “go down and pick out your dinner” as the naysayers proclaim. On spot #2, I did manage to get my gag though. It was my personal best. It was 37" long and weighed 25.15 lbs on the digital scale. They rarely get much bigger than that in 100’.
Totals for the day:
3 Gag grouper (25#, 23#, 19#)
2 Scamp grouper (+1 more released on R&R)
1 Hogfish
5 Red Snapper
Box full of dinner plate sized triggers
4-man limit of vermillions and about a million more releases.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Had a fantastic time bottom bouncing with you Edisto Fisher and Dean. Was a pleasure going with a crew who all love the sport and are all very knowledgeable in both fishing and seamanship. You and the crew are welcome to fish with me on the Emily Bliss anytime.
