The skinnee for 11/23/2013 (Big Reds)

Decided to take advantage of the small weather window. Headed offshore with my father, and my niece and nephew. Our mission was to try to get some nice BSB just 10 miles offshore or so. We soon realized that the kids might have a bit more fun on light tackle, so we rigged up a small 12 lb test spinning rod (my yellowtail snapper rod from Miami) with a single hook and light sinker. After a few fish, the rod bent over and I was sure that my nephew was hung on the bottom. Until the line started to scream off of the reel. After about half of the spool was gone we finally started to make some headway on the fish. I was thinking shark in my head the whole time until the color looked a bit funny. It was a beast redfish. Didn’t have a scale, but think it was at least 30+ lbs. It hit a piece of cut squid.

Ended up getting several nice bass and 4 giant redfish. Even got one of the redfish on a live lizard fish. I guess they will eat anything.

I know there are a few game hogs out there who don’t respect our natural resources can’t have a good time unless they catch 3x the limit and hide them in hatches all over the boat in case DNR stops them in order to get their “fair share”. But, we didn’t have to do that and still had a blast. We had a great time getting the family together and teaching them how to release fish. I have never caught reds before, but it was pretty cool. I can see why people chase after them. Now, I think I have to buy a boga grip or something.

And, before anyone asks, YES, all red fish were released.

Way to go. I saw a couple of boats ten miles out of Folly; maybe that was you. It was pretty nice out there Saturday. Sunday not so much.

That is a big one all right. Way to get the kids out and from in front of the TV!

Very possible. We could see folly from where we were. Another boat came and fished with us an hour or so before we left.

Don’t get a boga for them, they have huge swim bladders and don’t weigh nearly what you think. The cool kids measure them. Fifty inches(50") is where it’s at.

Nice day with the kids. Do they call you Uncle Skinnee?

Nice tip. Yeah, I've never weighed one before so compared it's mass to a grouper\snapper, and I have picked up a lot of 20-25 lb groupers before. I probably do need to get a longer measuring device. My coolers have a 36" ruler and he was quite a bit longer than that (didn't hold him up to it though), but I think 50" would be stretching it for these. I will be better prepared next time.

As far as the boga, I was thinking about using it to pull him forward in the water like a billfish for revival purposes. It was a bit awkward not having a handle on the front.

Skinnee’s gone soft, sheesh!

Man up and just put your thumb in his mouth, when he bites you, he’s ready to swim off.

That was quite powerful and compelling...

Anytime you can get some kids on the water and enjoy catching a few fish it’s a great day:smiley: I miss that, my son is 25, my nieces and nephews are in college and I don’t have any grand kids yet. Good job, Skineej.
