The skinnee for 5/10/2011 (troll spearing)

Wasn’t red hot yesterday, but we managed to claim the lives of a few fish. Started out looking 15nm offshore of the 226 hole in 80 degree water. Long ride out and no payout! Came back in a little and managed to scrape up a few dolphinfishes. Also had a few sailfish attack us. Went 1 for 3 on the sails. Think we may have had 1 more encounter with a sail, but not really sure. Also found a school of tuna on the sonar. Hoping that they were yellowfin, we worked the mark and had 4 or 5 lines start peeling drag. Landed 3 of them, but somehow, they mysteriously turned into daymaker skipjacks before they got to the boat.

Stopped in for our first dive of 2011 in 115’. Got some nice grouper on the spear and on R&R. Got my personal best scamp grouper at 21#. Sea life on the bottom was amazing. There were probably 75-100 LARGE red snapper. I bet that there were at least 2-3 dozen of them in the 20+lb range and MOST of them would have measured out to be legal. It’s really a shame that the SAFMC can’t figure this out during their monthly circle jerk. That’s what they have to be doing in those meetings, because they sure as hell aren’t counting fish. Did a second dive and got 1 lobster and a couple of hog fish.

Total for the day

12 dolphin
1 sailfish
3 skipjack
9 grouper
2 hogfish
1 lobster

Beats a good day of working any ol day! Nice goin.

Good fishing skin…

George Carlin said it best, ‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that’’.

nice report skinnee. How deep were you when you got the marks? You ever drop a vertical jig when you see those sonar marks? The 20lb. endangered snapper are a real nuisance when your trying to target fish that arent so endangered…like black sea bass for instance…oh wait…

Salt, I think we were in about 1200’. I only had my sonar set to monitor the upper 200’ of the water column so I am not sure of the exact depth. They were skippies anyway!

I hear ya man congrats either way!

There are some guys in MI that are keeping Skippys and swear they are the new tuna.
Never had the nerve to try one myself. We usually cut them for bait or toss em back.
12 dolphin and 9 grouper still ain’t bad.:sunglasses:

9 grouper I’m jealous

grab the gaff and another cold beer
