The skinnee for 5/16/2015

Tough fishing. Started out looking for a wahoo and only managed some bonitas and other trash. The sargasso grass was thick. If we were vegetarians we would have had a box full and been home early. It was pretty miserable though for carnivores.

Picked up and ran south and found some fish. Started picking at dolphins, but at this point it was getting later in the day and we had some diving to do. Also, boat is not running that well. Having engine problems and running a solid 20 knts.

Ended up with 10 dolphin up to 25lbs. They were still biting when we left, so I am sure we could have picked up some more.

Came into the Gardens to do a couple quick dives. First dive was a flop. I grabbed the wrong mask and forgot to put defog in it. I couldn’t keep the mask tight underwater and it kept wanting to fall off my face. Not something you want to happen at 90’. Every time I looked up, water would come rushing up through the bottom. Also, it was so badly fogged, I could barely read my gauges. Couldn’t clear it out to save my life, so I aborted the dive after only a few minutes. Of course, there were a few grouper around, but I wasn’t really in the game. Regrouped, switched masks, and applied some defog and hit spot #2. Was a nice 10’ ledge. Beautiful on the sonar, but didn’t see much down there. Mostly bait. Nothing to shoot at. Very strong thermocline at 39’ which is pretty early to be happening in May. Also, viz was like crappy the first 40’ and seemed to only clean up to about 25’ on the bottom and cold down there.

Oh well, I guess every day can’t be awesome, but we got enough for some tacos.

I called you on the radio after we spoke. You passed just inshore of us when you were heading out / south.
We had a frustrating day too. ended up with 7, but stopped at the ledge and killed some nice bottomfish!
Good talking to you. Pops was on the boat too. I think I wore him out.
Catch up soon.

Ah man, sorry, probably couldn't hear you over the engines. I'll give you a shout next time we go out. Good thing your pops is still fishing. Mine is ready to get back out there as well. Nothing beats fishing with your dad after all these years!
