The fiance said that she was tired of catching dolphin and wanted a weehoo, so we went in search for them. It was me, Rebecca, Boston Mikey and his wife Pam. Mikey had some bad luck this morning. He wasn’t wearing gloves and let a leader slide through his fingers only to find a crimp on the way. It tore up 3 fingers pretty bad and he will get some stitches, but he toughed it out and let a few drops of blood in the ocean to wake up the wahoo.
I had to put on my roller skates to get around the cockpit a little faster, but we ended up having a pretty busy day. We caught 13 men in the green suit and 3 wahoo. The wahoo weren’t monsters, but they were good sized fish. I’ll post some pics tomorrow. We probably could have caught more, but wanted to do a dive or two on the way in and pulled lines around 1:30.
Also, I talked Rebecca into doing a dive with me and I’m very proud to say that she did her very first dive in Charleston waters. She looked real good underwater except she wouldn’t let me shoot any of the grouper we saw. Something about being scared of sharks. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any lobsters. All in all, a fun day. The two girls on the boat reeled in all but 2 fish, but they let me reel in all the barracuda, all by myself. It’s not often they let me reel in anything. THANKS!!!
Note that the girl was not actually a part of the kill. She was not harmed for this photo. We actually just sat her there to give some scale to the pictures.
nice catch… and who cares about the gaff…many people who try to gaff them in the head end up missing the fish and it gets off… and you only loose like maybe 2 lbs of meat… so if gaff every wahoo you catch in the back and not the head you have alot of meat and are ahead of the game if you try to gaff the fish in the head and miss one 40 # you will need to head gaff 20 more for the meat you lost on that one gaff… tell the girls good job on getting them in the boat…
Good job Jason. And congrats on getting Rebecca in the water.
Solo, head gaffs aren’t just to preserve meat. Head gaffs are to control the fish. If you gaff a green fish in the middle or towards the tail then prepare for a wild ride. Body and tail gaffs are great ways to lose fish. Also a great way to bend or lose your gaff too.
Skinneej, have some friends coming to town who dive, I don’t dive. Was wondering what area you where in to see those grouper, or the depth of water. Any info would be apprecited.
