Spent the first part of the day with the fleet looking for billfish. Several boats around us were seeing them, but we never got a visual. We did get a huge mystery bite. Fish didn’t know he was hooked at first and when we went to apply pressure on him, he put the afterburners on for a moment. Had a good bit of the spool off and then broke us off. Never got to see him, but there weren’t many meat fish being caught where we were. Spent most of the day there and then it was time to look for some meat. Picked up a few fish here and there, but never any red hot action. I did see a wahoo pop up behind a flat line and tail the bait for a couple of seconds. Looked like a black torpedo headed at the boat. He faded off and as I was explaining to the others what I saw, 20 seconds later the longrigger starts dumping line… Had the fish all the way up to 20 yards off of the transom and pull the hook on him. Daymaker #2 lost!
Anyway, we ended up with 7 dolphin and 1 blackfin. We pulled off a couple more fish, but our big dolphin of the day was 40+lbs. Oh, and I don’t mean a 25lb internet 40lb’er. I mean this one:
That being said, I need a new fish model. Black Bart makes the fish look at bit smaller, but no doubt, this was a brute. Look at the nice mature dorsal.
Dang good fish, no matter what it weighed. I’ve really never much bothered with weighing and measuring fish unless it was for a tournament, to check if it was possibly a record, or to make sure it’s legal. Otherwise who cares? Nice fish
