Dolphin bite has been a bit slower than it has been for us. Had sells fish and the guys from Z-Man on the boat. Had my mother’s bossman join us fishing. He’s an avid fisherman, hunter, but hadn’t had a dophin under the belt, so I promised him one. I ended up keeping my promise and he got him a 20 lb’er. Coolest thing is that he is a hobby taxedermist and wanted to mount it and put it in his trophy room. Always a great feeling knowing that you put someone else on an accomplishment fish.
Anyway, around lunch time, we started seeing some good bait in the area and a sportie a couple miles away with black smoke all around. So, I made the call. Let’s pull some meat out of the spread and drop the lures into the water. It seemed like 5 minutes later, we hear a quick “ZIP” of drag on the Penn International 30 that was pulling a lure that I bought on my honeymoon (it’s sister lure got eaten by a wahoo last week). I thought the guys were screwing with me, but they were not. I cranked it back into place and again, there was a splash behind the bait and pulled out about 10-15 feet of line and spit the hook again. I cranked it back into place and again for the 3rd time, the mystery fish bit, pulled a few feet of line and spit the hook. Then, I started to get creative. I dropped the lure back about 15-20 feet and then started cranking as quickly as possible. That turned him on and a hole appeared under the lure and the drag started peeling off. We had boats pretty close to us so we moved the angler up the front of the boat as the line was peeling off and went on a chase. Caught up to the fish and stayed on top of it. Then, about 30 yards away from us, it made it’s first appearance doing the jump away from the boat with his back to us. We all yell, “BLUE MARLIN” and the fight is on. We continue to stay tight to the fish and once we get him close, he’s on the surface thrashing his bill and I throw it into reverse and bring the lure up to the boat. sellsfish grabs the lure and starts taking wraps. We remo
Nice work, we had a blue “in the spread” today but she wasn’t interested. Other than that we had a similar day on the dolphin. Saltfisher was talking to you guys late in the day, no wahoo on the ledge for us.
Pretttttyyyy work Jason!!! Looking forward to Big Rock and Hatteras Blue Marlin Club Tournaments in the next two weeks. Jesse had a 400lb blue yesterday I told you about the triple blues and a white on sunday. Sounds like our boat is getting tageted in on the billfish. Hope to see you in Hatteras in two weeks, DAD
George Carlin said it best, ‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that’’.
Not sure Alex. I haven't seen enough BM's to tell, but my gut feeling was 150 lbs. It wasn't a big one, but we'll take it. Sellsfish thinks it was bigger. We have a couple of pictures, that I will post when I get a moment.
