The skinnee for 6-30-2008 (Kona, HI)

FISHING:

Fished today out of Kona. Did not get a bite all day, but at least it was a nice day offshore. They had a tournament for the past 2 days and 59 boats only caught 10 blues (one of which was caught by our captain yesterday and won him some money). Seems like the marlin are all in Charleston right now. Did see some pilot whales, false killer whales, and a free jumping sword fish at 2:30 in the afternoon which was a rare treat. Also, pulled live skippies around a fad that was covered with birds and bait until the porpoise showed up and ate all the live baits. Then we went back to lures. Oh well, I guess that is marlin fishing for you.

DIVING:

We did get to do a night dive last night and encountered 23 manta rays (they all have distinct markings almost like whale identification). The biggest one “big bertha” was 16 feet wide. Got some great video, but I got yelled at underwater for touching them. It’s probably the coolest dive I have ever done. If we had time, we would probably do their “black water” dive. That’s where they take you out in 900 fathoms of water in the black of the night and let you dangle 50’-100’ down with a flashlight to see what you can see. They got some good film of a large oceanic white tip a few weeks ago and lots of alien looking jellyfish. Also did a dive yesterday looking for their 16’ resident tiger shark but did not see him. They say he is fed pretty good so probably won’t eat a diver.

Anyway, still here, but will be back on the mainland just in time for 4th of July.

PS If I can get a few volunteers together, I might want to do a few night dives in Chucktown. We might see some cool stuff. Never know until you try, I guess.

It is that piece of mind that really make it easy to get into the water.

The dive sounds great. I dove stingray city in Cayman and that was quite the experience. We were able to touch and feed them. Glad your enjoying the islands.

BRAINSTORM

I had the pleasure of fishing out of Kona a few years back on the Ho’oke’le with Capt. Terwilliger. Great time and some the prettiest water I’ve ever seen. Tagged and released a striped marlin and got REAL close and checked out a whale shark. It was awsome and I would encourage anyone that gets the chance to make the trip. :sunglasses:
