The Skunk Is Off the Boat!

As some of y’all know, I purchased my first boat a few months ago. I live in Charlotte, so I’ve only been able to put the boat in the water a handful of times. Got the opportunity to fish this past Saturday, so away the wife and I went.

Put in at Wappoo Cut and headed to the harbor. Saw a couple of other boats in the area, which was encouraging that I’d successfully scouted a productive spot (thanks, Optiker!). In the process of fishing the bank, I somehow managed to get my foot caught between my front poling platform and the gunwale, which resulted in my falling in the water, killing my phone and losing my Battle/Stellar Lite combo. Got my wits about me, said a quick prayer to the man above, drug the bottom, and retrieved my rod and reel!

Finished the day fishing the bank on the other side of the Wappoo bridge. While I was rigging a rod to fish a Trout Trick, I tell the wife to hold the rod I’d been fishing (with a mud minnow under a float). Low and behold, she manages to pull up a trout on her 2nd cast! First fish on the new (to us) boat! We release the fish and re-bait the rod. I work on getting us repositioned, and she catches ANOTHER trout in the process! We finish the day with those two fish and a story that’s sure to be around for years to come. Pictures may be forthcoming per the wife’s approval…

A sincere thank you to all of y’all. Your reports and ■■■■■■■■ have been invaluable in shortening my (our) learning curve. Thank God for the Lowcountry!

Awesome! And congrats. Glad your mishap turned out all OK. You could have really hurt yourself - be careful!

Very gratifying to hear that a spot you scouted seemed to be productive! Great! Just some background: Bart PM’d me for tips on scouting by google, and I gave him some patterns to look for - the same ones that i look for when scouting a new-to-me area.

Looking forward to seeing some future catches, once you replace that phone  (Been there, done that, BTW - 2X w/in 4 wks)

Sounds like you got what you were looking for! Good times man! Glad you got your gear back, I have had to do that myself before lol… And X2 on thank God for the Lowcountry!

I hope your wife took pictures of that

Sure glad you’re OK, falling out on oysters in shallow water could be serious. Falling out the boat is a rite of passage, just go ahead and get it out the way early[:I]

Congrats on getting off the skunk:smiley:

That won’t be the last time you fall off your boat more than likely. After a while you start to learn to toss the phone and car keys on the console so they stay dry! Congrats on the boat, the fishing, not getting hurt and getting your gear back

Congrats! That casting platform can be a little tricky to move around, but great for getting up higher to see the fish. Can’t wait to hear a lot more fishing reports.

Give me a call if you are looking to buy or sell a home. Always like helping out a fellow fisherman!

loosing the cell phone or any other item of importance to you is part of the price you have to pay to put fish in the boat!! I’ve lost rods and a cell phone all in the name of catching!!

enjoy the ‘new’ boat…lets see some pix!

BB I dig your honesty!

yes, i never have anything that can be damaged by water in my pockets.

Here’s one reason why, and this is not a tall tale: One time in the gulf on a nearshore oil rig, a buddy of mine was fishing a live shrimp on 12 lb test mono with a bass fishing style worm hook (reel was a cur ado i think). we had been catching spanish mackerel. All of a sudden, something big takes his shrimp and he almost gets spooled 3 times. He gets a 3 foot king mack to the boat only to have him dive back down 2 or 3 more time. Last time it was right next to the boat, the 12 lb test broke with the fish just out of reach. Without thinking, I jumped in and grabbed his tail and my buddies pulled me back in as my shins and feet were still in the boat. I ended up soaked, and anything in my pockets would have been toast… Got a king mack in the cooler tho!

Thanks, Pea and everyone else. Makes me feel better hearing about y’all’s mishaps. Best part about it was finding the lost rig. That by itself was the morale booster I needed keep fishing. Needless to say, I have a full-fledged fishing addiction. I guess I can think of worse afflictions…

I’ve got pretty thick skin, both literally and figuratively, so I’ll be okay…

Fish long enough and you will fall in the drink! I was catching bait in front of the outflow pipe at the papermill, and my friend threw the skiff in reverse to hard…in I went! He was afraid I was going to throw him in. I have fallen out of my commercial boat in Shem creek at low tide while trying to put a cooler on the dock (got cut up on that one). And I fell out of the BONSAI trying to lift Harold’s yellow lab back in the boat after it went swimming with the dolphins!
