I put in at the dam for a change this morning & headed over to Pine Island, where I’d caught fish before this time of year. Landed a couple of nice 6 lb. fish almost right away. Then a few shorts and they disappeared. After a couple of hours of cruising around & not finding anything, I headed over to the cut at Wesenger(sp?) Island.
Now the giveth part. I caught my first fish within 10 min. of getting there. Short, but still fun. Caught a couple more, then my first striper over 10lbs. It weighed 18.9 lbs. I didn’t think it would fit in the net.
Now, the taketh away part. Within a minute of releasing the big one, I had another on! It felt at least as big. It started to go around the boat, and I was going over & under the other rods. Well, while passing the rod under another, the fish made a mad run in mid-grip & the rod, reel, & planer board went with him. I searched for over 45 min. hoping the board would float up. No luck.
I guess it’s as good excuse as any to buy a new set up.

Very nice fish! Good release!!
My dad lost a rod when I was young. A couple weekends later the rescue dive squad was there practicing and he asked a diver if he would look for his rod. My dad knew exactly where he lost it, wasnt that deep, 30 ft or so. Diver came back with 3 rods before he found my dads. It happens a lot I guess.

If you read my post, I was using planer boards. I did have a free line out the back, but nothing ever touched it. I did catch a couple on a down rod in the back. All fish were caught in 25-35 feet of water.
I’m going out this morning & picking up a new 6500 C3 reel & new rod. Probably going to look into getting a new net too. The one in the picture has got to be 15-20 yrs. old! I guess I’d better pick up another left(port) planer board also.
If anyone fishes that area, keep an eye out for a WaterBugz board, possibly still connected to a Abu reel & Ugly Stick rod. The board has my name & cell number on it.

While fishing last year on Lake Bonepart, ny with my youngest grandson we lost a pole. Yesterday my grandsons 10 and 11 were fishing and saw a rapala floating so they pulled it in and low and behold they had the pole we last summer.
Nice Fish Bob! Sorry about losing the rod… I’ve gotten a few back with a big weight and a treble hook from time to time dragging the bottom. Last year, we left a rod out of the back of the boat while cut bait fishing on Clarks Hill, as we were motoring to the next spot, i look back to see what the faint winding noise was i was hearing, to see the rod that was laying straight out of the rod holder, reach the end of the spool and jump out of the boat. I figured the fishing line should be on the same track as the line on the GPS recording our track. I was fishing on Billy Durants boat with Tom Gitto and asked if they had a big treble hook. All we had was a rooster tail jig with a treble hook, so i tied it on with a two ounce egg sinker above it. My partners were very skeptical to say the least and commented we were wasting time but it was my rod that left the boat… We went back 50 yards or so and i casted over the path we had traveled in the boat on the GPS and wound it in slowly…I snagged the line on the first cast and brought the rod right back in the boat…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
Bob you can get replacement netting for that net if its just dry rotted…either rubber or plastic coated netting would be my recommendation. or plasikote it yourself… Check out Jan’s Netcraft for replacement netting.

I don’t feel as bad losing the combo as I do missing a chance at another big striper.
I stopped by Lake World this morning & picked up a new Abu 6500 C3 and an Ugly Stick striper rod. So now I’m ready to go again! Sometimes I wish I didn’t have to work to be able to fish.
