1st time poster here. I’m curious as to how close, is too close, when flirting with low tide in the Sound. On a normal tide, I’m guessing if I pack it up 2 hrs before, this would give me plenty of time. Or, should I just watch for the oyster bed caps to start showing? And for those die hards, I’m not above doing “the stomp”…I’d just rather paddle out. Any info would be much appreciated.
I take it your talking about copahee sound. if you launch an hour or an hour and a half before low tide follow the line into the middle basin, that area holds enough water to paddle on any low tide 0.5 or better. as the tide rises you can venture out into 1st and 3rd basins. be back to the middle an hour and a half before low and follow the line out. i cant guarantee all this 100% but you got to start somewhere. just take your time and keep track of where you are and after awhile you will figure it out. always best to be prepared to get stuck and not need it than to get stuck and not have it. FISH ON !!!
IF you get stuck in the 1st basin, there IS NO STOMP. You sit in the mud until the tide comes back. The only area where you can do the stomp is up the creek from the launch.
If you time it wrong, you get to sit in the mud for about 2 hours. Have plenty of water and sunscreen.
Boat drinks, Waitress I need 2 more boat drinks!
Great info fellas! I’ve been rolling around the idea of getting into a kayak for a few years. A month ago, I finally decided to simplify things & pulled the trigger on a used Predator 13. No more kicking myself for not hooking the boat up when I’m out of town; an easy haul/launch/load in the truck bed; significant cut to annual fuel expenses; a whole bunch of pro’s over con’s. All that plus a heck of a lot more time on less crowded, fishy water. I’m hooked on yak.
Big thanks for the useful advice on Copahee!
If you want some more advice on the area and other places & rigging ideas come out to the Lowcountry Kayak Anglers (LKA) meet & fish on Aug 30th @Bushy park. just follow the thread on the forum for the time and a map to the area. Tight lines!
