I haven’t been in a while, but I’m going to go out in the morning for a couple of hours looking for some schooling fish. If I run across any I’ll call or txt.
They bit just fine for me today. Out solo, it was a struggle at first with nothing but shorts. However, after a big move I ended up catching 8 keepers with 2 in the 8-10 pound class, pulling in 8-22 feet of water uplake. A good day fishing and a Gamecock victory to boot!
Interesting. I am taking the kayak out tomorrow and was planning on fishing deep. This changes things. Is it early for them to be moving up the lake to more shallow water?
Nope. Not unusual at all. Some fish move up well before turnover, while others will move afterwards. You can still catch fish over the depths down lake, but most will be shorts. A couple of years ago, I caught fish up lake on Halloween; so tired of dealing with so many shorts, I decided to give it a try.
We had a good day Friday pulling boards and another boat near us had a really good day with multiple 15+lb class fish and caught the mess out of them. Above the gap.

That’s REAL strong right there. I’ve been striper fishing only a few years and I’ve only caught 1 fish 15 lbs or bigger and never even caught multiple 10 lb fish in a single trip.
If the fish move shallow again, could the cut bait bite return?
Cut bait can be very good this time of year upriver. Years ago when I had my little Hightide that was easier to get anchored correctly, I did it all the time. Points adjacent to the channel in 15-20 feet would produce until the surface temperature reached the low 50’s. Now I simply enjoy pulling too much. If you see me double anchored and cutbaiting, all else has probably failed me.
I’d love to troll, just don’t have the set up now to go slow enough. I am set up to be a double anchor machine when the time is right though.
I saw a lot of guys on Clark Hill using cut bait over there but it is so much different there than on Murray. There are several spots that I would still cut bait on Murray right now but I’m too ADD. I have to be the move.

REAL strong…
Sorry for the changing of the images but I don’t know those pictured and this was not caught on my boat. I’m not sure the exact weight of these fish was just eyeballing them but I know they were both well bigger than 10lb class fish but these are the 2 I was referencing. Again, apologize for cropping and coloring the images but keeping someone else’s clients and locations private in respect for them.
