Expecting a banner weather day in December (which didn’t quite match my interpretation of the forecast), we picked up our usual 2 dozen herring from Lake World. Little smaller than usual, but that was fine. Pulled planer boards and downrods in 40-50 feet water around a hump we like at Ballentine. Saw more fish than I think I ever had on the fish finder. Lost count of the actual fish landed as we had several doubles and one triple, which gets my adrenalin going overdrive, but it was well over a dozen with at least 6 keepers, the two biggest being 23 and 25 inches.
Good day for us as our previous trips have been more of the so, so variety. Posted a pic of the 25 incher since that spices up posts on this forum in my opinion.

Nice fish, looks a lot skinnier than the ones up in the river. There always seems to be fish in Jakes and Ballentine no matter what time of year it is.

GREAT JOB!!! I agree with Tom … the fish upriver are really fat right now … If I can get the boat all fixed then we’ll be out there …

it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish now!!!

Can, or would anyone provide me with some specifics on location? I am wanting to try fishing for them from my kayak, but I have only fished Murray once and I am not real familiar with it. If you would be willing, you can email me or pm me.
Thanks,
also if someone would like to join me, a buddy boat/kayak would be great.

I’d read Tom’s post and realized that our two biggest ones were more streamlined, but a few of the shorts we caught were a lot chunkier. I’m a believer that the better fishing is up on the upper end.
One other weird thing, with one exception, all fish were caught off the port side of the boat. We reversed track several times, but the rods on my side stayed quiet.
If I were fishing from a kayak, I would put in up the Little Saluda and cast the banks with a bucktail/icefly combo! and watch for birds working ,but be careful of the idiots in the bass boats, might think of having a high mast with a orange flag! Good luck and be careful.
Boatpoor,
Thanks. Yes, I do have a safety flag (with light). And that is exactly why I got it - the bass boats!

I just need a window of opportunity. Wind, cold, and rain in a kayak is no fun. It’s like having to sit in a cold puddle all day!

Just get a good rain coat and a tight fitting water proof skirt!
