I cant disagree more. This site is specifically built so we can share our information.
Sure, if you have “secret” spots, then keep them a secret but the area discussed above is well known. It’s not secret, there is no secret. When 20+ boats are all piled on top of each other, the secret’s gone. Everyone in the surrounding area knows whats going on.
Weather you like it or not, people learn from each other. I have never deep holed before, but last week I got in the group and threw a few times. I was surprised to see the amount of shrimp in the net. There were 8 keepers. I threw for a while in the general same area as the other boats. I averaged less than a dozen each throw. But, it gave me hope. It’s a good start, it’s a place I know holds shrimp, now I have to dial it in. Now I have to spend the time to learn the details. Just because someone says here is a “hole” which isn’t actually a hole at all but a long contour change, doesn’t mean every boat that shows up is going to cooler out.
My point is, no matter how detailed you are on here, you cant dial anything in until your on the water.
I consider all the information I have received from this site as a “start”. It gets me started, then I have to do the work, spend the time, and learn just like everyone else.
The more people that get this “start” on a free to the world to read website , the more people there will be out there in years to come.
There will be more out of towners coming as well, especially when they’re READING ON THE INTERNET how well everyone is doing down here at a certain time.
I have personally seen the #'s of boats consistently rising the last couple years
And I’m out there pretty regularly but believe what you want.

And how per say do you think the secret became “non secret”??
Loose lips? Ignorant social media posts? Informative CF.com posts? Etc…?
No, your probably right, I’m sure that the 100+ boats that jingled with each other last Saturday have always known about deep holing and that spot specifically. They must have been just holding out the last 10 years and waited until last weekend to try it out.
So your saying, the more we talk about it, the more people will try it, the more people will buy the nets and poles, pay the license, buy the bait, support the local establishments, buy more gas, pay for lodging, eat out, etc…
And you live in a tourist town whose local economy relies on people from “out of town” to come here and spend money.
We get all this money for just the possibility of catching a few shrimp?
The DNR should be giving out booklets with popular spots, techniques, times, tides… or maybe we locals should encourage the sharing of information to who ever wants to spend their money here and support our economy.
Oh wait, were apparently to selfish for such things.
I read most threads from the last few years and do not recall anyone giving out “numbers” for that spot so I am going to guess that most people out there saw someone else there and gave it a try. I mean come on, your in a boat with no poles throwing huge taped castnets. It’s not a normal thing “out of towners” would see on the water. It sparks interest and they go searching for more information.
I do agree that the better the season the more boats you see. I think this year and last year were good seasons so we are going to see a lot more traffic. Combine that with the easy availability of commercially made and custom deep hole nets, easy bait like Bait Binder, and no more drives to Columbia for fiberglass poles and you have the making for a fun and possibly rewarding trip on the water.
I you guys want to run an agenda, talk about the expenses. Tell everyone how much it costs to shrimp. It might deter some because it sure as hell cant beat the price at the store. That is if you can stomach asian poop shrimp.
If it sounded like I said people on this board can’t catch shrimp, I truly apologize. What I meant was, most while deep holing are only catching a few per cast, as firogatto said he did. Do I agree with spilling the whole cup of beans on here no. But dont really see the difference in posting a deep holing report, versus a baiting report with a location.
The important thing is that everyone here is interested enough or cares enough to talk about. Good Thread. Be neighborly and yes sometimes the other guy gets a brain fart and drifts through your set. It’s hard to hold your beer, yell at the crew and drive all at the same time.:)No one tries to do it. It just happens share the water.
The availability of the new nets, poles , bait binder and any other piece of equipment makes access or entry a little easier, but it still takes time on the water, practice and some luck. I have about the same luck with Deep Dropping as I do with bait. We’ll get enough shrimp to eat and put up for the year. If the (**()ed weather would only cooperate we’ll get back to it. this weekend lookd like crap…again. See you out there where ever it is.
they where posting gps numbers on this sight just a couple years ago. Not only did that send more people but it also got more people stuck on sand bars, I now see that every day. When I started shrimping on the bay it was unregulated. 2 or 3 boats was a crowd and we all knew each other. 30 years ago I over heard a friend of mine at Haddrells sending people up to the bay and told him to stop, because I knew that this was going to happen. Now you can’t go on the weekend for the boats. Now there are more rubber heads out there than people that know what they are doing. Please don’t think I care, this is just an observation.
a lot more people in the Lowcountry now than 30 years ago…while I do not disagree that the internet shortens people’s learning curves, there are just flat out a lot more people on the water and enjoying the natural resources these days too…
no doubt about it, and I am happy to help anyone that puts forth the effort. What I won’t do is put it on the web for every couch potato to read. Also, I tried to help one guy that had his wife running with the current and cross wind. He was yelling at her to slow down, stop, turn u name it. When I told him it was easier to drive into the current I was told to mind my own business. So now that is exactly what I do. Cept for two days ago, I let some guy follow me back to the hill, he had been lost for a couple of hours. Well, stuck for one, lost for one.
Tel I’m the same way, will help anyone. But I have been catching shrimp with no one around and had a boat come up, look around and leave, never even cast. Im not going to call him back and tell them there are shrimp there.
The big problem I see deep holing is, a boat or two are catching shrimp another boat pulls up throws a couple of times, and gets on the phone. That one call goes all over the river, and here comes the calvary.
If we were all honest, we would admit that it would be cheaper to buy them than to catch them ourselves. We do it because it fun, and the camaraderie.
Man it used to be fun. Now you can’t park, u have to wait at the ramp for some rubber head to get his boat ready, and on the water they drive by u putting up a 2’ wake, now it’s like work. I try to late afternoon or at night just to have some peace.
Camaraderie involves comrades... I think the complaint is educating complete STRANGERS on the internet... Nobody is suggesting not to help anyone. But why turn over the knowledge that you have worked to acquire over the years to complete strangers that would cut your throat tomorrow for your parking place at Wappoo Cut? That's the point... It's not about "sharing". It's about WHO you are sharing with on a completely indiscriminate basis... Give a report. Leave out the 2 page seminar... Share details over PMs... Everyone is happy...
yeh but I’m from yesterdays society. Today I got 4 gal of tails and was almost the only boat out there. I had a blast, 1-2 dozen per cast before the rain came, and they were jumbos. I was by myself with 4 beers and half a pizza. At the hill at 4, home and showered by 8. Almost like the old days.
The main problem I see is that most don’t see or understand the problem here… It took me a while but then it hit me why this is. It’s likely that fewer people care about all this open sharing of information because they in fact came about it in the same way. Only those who work there a** off to find shrimp/fish/bait are the ones that are hurt by this. There is just less and less of those people around now days with all the one click wonders out there thinking it’s easy because their wife’s cousins uncle told them where to go or even worse they read it on the Internet. JMHO
I also understand that this won’t change, in fact it will only get worse. Why do something the hard way when an easier way presents itself. I don’t blame you… That would be like telling someone who takes advantage of food stamps not to use them. The problem isn’t with them, it’s whoever allowed them to qualify in the first place…
