Things I learned this weekend....and today

Also yall might want to reread the first sentence of my previous post. “Not that we all need to be giving away locations…”

First, Most, Biggest

One person gives up the location, the next gives up the techniques... It's not hard to take 1 and 1 and make 2...

Look again, I will be the first to call people for intel. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with sharing information with people that you know. But sharing on the WWW with 7 BILLION people? Come on! Do you really truly not see why people take issue with that? Post all the reports you want, but once you start “teaching” and it sounds like you are giving a seminar, it’s time to hit the brakes…

There are literally guys that will read this post, absorb whatever you want to tell them and then be yelling at you to get out of their way next week. Those same guys will steal your extra cooler out of the back of your pickup and run through your poles cussing you along the way… They don’t care about you, and they still won’t after they read your post… You won’t even get a “thank you” for giving up your favorite spot… That being said, if you wanted to PM it to me, I would say “thank you” and actually be grateful… But that’s just me and I am only ONE of 7 BILLION…

Didn’t I just explain how nobody OWN’s the shrimp or water?

Yes, you did waste your breath explaining something completely irrelevant to the discussion. It was irrelevant when you first explained it and it is still irrelevant now... If people were telling you that you didn't have a right to go shrimping, then this argument might be relevant, but that's not what people are saying...

Our natural resources are FINITE. The human population is INFINITE. Access to those resource is limited. Lack of knowledge is perhaps THE GREATEST form of access restriction. We still have the resource because of… here it comes… lack… of… knowledge…

Knowledge is power…

So 4 days before this was topic was posted, there was a post that started off the same way. It started at the landing, “don’t know which one” a guy is taking out, as their boat is being put in, and tells them he has caught a cooler deep holing. One gives to much detail as far as depth, and kind of where he caught them in their report. The other gives the 3 most important details to deep holing in theres, which I want say what they are. Now to much info is being put on the internet, and the resource is in danger because of deep holing, and reports of. One report is no different than the other, as far as details. Shrimp are no different than doves, they only live about a year and half. There are two regulations that could be changed. 1. Hold off on opening commercial shrimp season until after the roe shrimp have come in. 2. Set shrimping up like turkey hunting you get x amount of tags for all shrimp caught, ie a half a cooler or full, and when they are gone your done. Be careful what you ask for.

hold off commercial season until the roe shrimp come in where?the season is not opened until the fisheries biologists from the DNR have deemed a certain percentage to have spawned.

Pro tip: new deep hole hot spot at Calhoun and East Bay Street from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM.

I have read this whole thread and would like to throw a few things out there. I have been shrimping for over twenty years and would like to say that there were way more shrimpers before Hurricane Hugo than there are now. That’s right, just brought Hugo up, so you know I’m talking about awhile ago. I saw shrimping go from its prime to non-existent, back to what it is now. There is plenty of shrimp to go around, but yes you have to put in the time and work for them. Its not as easy as it used to be.
So to the people that don’t like the sharing of information…Why are you on this site then? Are you too are here to share in everyone’s successes, find out new locations, techniques, baits, the like or just do a little bragging when you have a good day on the water. Either way, you are here because the info is here, you are either trying to find it or author it. This is a place for sharing life’s events and who wouldn’t want others to have those same experiences.
Share life with one another. With that said, I was smart enough to stay in doors this weekend, but last weekend, I had a full cooler on Friday and about 1/3 of a cooler on Saturday. Same spot and I would not have been there if someone wouldn’t have provided me a “starting” point. I still had to put in the hours and spend the money. I have shrimped the Charleston Harbor for a long time. If you want to know where to shrimp, all you have to do is ride around near sunset. People are there for a reason. Just like the deep holers’. I have never attempted that, but sounds like it could be interesting.
Keep posting! I’m not too old to learn new tricks nor am I too selfish to spread the wealth. For those still wondering. Two places I have spent a lot of time…James Island side of the harbor (near yatch club) and the crab bank. I welcome the extra bait in the water!!!

nice post Donnie. like you; i have been at this bait shrimping stuff for almost 26 years and still do not have it all down pat. you are right; there is plenty of shrimp to go around. i have let many people put their poles where mine are when i am ready to leave and the shrimp are still there. it is the same as our crappie fishing on lake murray. there are more than enough crappie to go around and i have had people follow me in the channel drifting when they were not as fortunate as my and my son on their own. i believe when you give it will eventually come back to you.

So you guys learned everything from random strangers on the internet, or people who you have actually met or interacted with on a personal basis?

Again, I share PLENTY of information with people who (at a minimum) send me a private message, etc. I just don’t see the point of educating THOUSANDS of people how to be efficient predators. Sorry, but I reserve that information for people who I at least know something about their morals, ethics, etc.

I don’t think anyone has said “don’t share”. It’s a matter of sharing responsibly…

The only thing we have learned about shrimping is…yah gotta get your tail away from the square box at the house and go do it! Everyone has come home with a dusting at the bottom of the cooler and a limit.

It is like Christmas every season for us and as a couple we have many spots and truly have a blast! You can read all you want on technique-shrimp move during their romantic mud flat fest. Deep hole- no hole the motto is “If they are in there…there in there”.

The Photo’s from last year with NO WATER-CRAZY OCTOBER MOON still catching shrimp. First Mate says, "Captain the Poles are above the water and Depth finder says…1 foot 6 inches-1 hour off low…“The first mate is now leaving-shrimp or no shrimp!”

1 foot 2 inches…wth? Time to go!
